Inspired by that other thread where fighters were saying who hit them the hardest. Holmes' comment stuck to my mind

"Earnie Shavers was indeed the hardest puncher I ever fought, because he hit me with a right hand that jarred my ancestors in Africa, if you want to take a page from Ali’s book. Tyson is a sharp puncher. Earnie Shavers was a punishing puncher. There was a difference between the two. Because when Shavers hit you, you feel it all the way through your body."

That's a good distinction between power punchers I think. For example, before the Pac Cotto fight, I remember I made a comment regarding the difference between being hit by Cotto and being hit by Pac was like the difference between being run over by a truck and being run over by a speeding sports car. Which i guess translates to Cotto being more of a punishing puncher and Pac being a sharp puncher.

Who else do you guys think fit the criteria?

George Chuvalo said something very similar to the difference between getting hit by Frazier and Foreman. Something like Foreman was like getting hit by a semi going 50 mph and Frazier was like getting hit by a sports car going 100 mph.

I think it also applies to Vitali and Wlad Klitchko.

Interesting. Which explains why Frazier certainly looked like he was being hit by a semi going 50 mph against Foreman...

I'm guessing they're under the punishing category?

Some fighters rely on speed and timing to hit a fighter when he isnt expecting it or when he is walking into the punch. These shots to alot of damage because a fighter isnt able to brace his neck/jaw/legs to absorb the shot.

Other fighters rely on a superb technique to get the most out of kinetic energy and make their punches devastating even if you see them coming. These fighters usually plant their legs and sit down on their punches.

Examples of the first are Pac,Marquez ect...

Examples of the second are Pavlik,Cotto ect...

I would classify them as both, economic with their punches every shot counted and with bad intentions to hurt.

    How's that? :blood

Wladimir is both sharper and more punishing a puncher than Vitali.
