August twenty-third at Carnival City Casino in Brakpan, a mining town in Gauteng, SA. Boxing 5 Promotions will air the card live on YouTube. Potgieter makes a first defense of the South African heavyweight title, having beaten the man that beat Thompson for it.

Crosstown rivalry, with both the incumbent and southpaw challenger hailing from Gauteng. Both were blown out in their biggest steps up to global level - Potgieter losing to Justis Huni via TKO2 in January, and Thompson via KO1 to Bakhodir Jalolov in 2023. Both are proper super heavyweights (although Thompson debuted at cruiser and has campaigned at bridger) with Potgieter standing 6′4½″ and Thompson in that same neighborhood; despite not having any height or reach stats officially listed, you can tell he's no more than a few inches shorter than Jalolov who is 6'7".

I asked Shaun point blank on his official Instagram page if he is any relation to Ewart Frederick Potgieter (the sport's tallest recorded competitor at 7'2" - putting him two inches above Nikolai Valuev!) ...figuring there were decent odds, with both of them being white South African boxers and Shaun being larger than average if not abnormally so. Turns out, just a coincidence - his exact words being "not that I'm aware of, but that would be cool!". Guess it's a fairly common Afrikaans surname in the former Dutch colonies. :nusenuse:

Potgieter's best victory to date is an 11th round knockout of Keaton Gomes in their rematch last year, to claim the SA HW belt. Gomes had previously stopped him in 1 round in 2022, and is now on a hot streak in the Riyadh Season WBC Boxing Grand Prix and headed into the heavyweight semifinals in October.

Thompson's highest-profile coup, in turn, is a wide UD over Alexandru Andrei Jur of Romania. Despite being stopped by Jalolov and Gomes, he did manage to go the distance in his other steps up in class losing decisions to Evgeny Romanov and Solomon Dacres.

    Common opponents:
    • Mussa Ajibu - lost against Thompson via TKO3 in 2021 and once again in 2025; lost to Potgieter via KO2 in 2024.
    • Keaton Gomes - defeated Potgieter via TKO1 in 2022, and lost to him via KO11 in 2024; defeated Thompson via TKO6 in 2022.
    • Joshua Pretorius - lost a 4-rounder on points against Thompson at cruiserweight in 2017 and lost a heavyweight UD12 rematch in 2022; lost to Potgieter via TKO3 in 2023.
    • Youssouf Kasongo Mwanza - lost against Thompson via RTD3 in 2019; lost to Potgieter via MD8 in 2023.

Chief support will be welterweight six-rounder Almighty Moyo vs. Bonke Duku, which is all just a delight to say out loud. :)

Eyyy lekker, Brakpan of all places. You know what they say: you can be #1 in the world but you will always be #2 in Brakpan.

Kind of a rough mining town with a reputation.
