In any case, Boston Tom was a thorougly modern fighter with a thoroughly modern mustache that even Shavers would be unable to punch off. All of this bull**** about modern training and nutrition and mustache waxes is basically nonsense.

If Wlad tried to grow a tache today it would no doubt be some weak pencil thin jobbie that would routinely require reapplication with PED infused moustache adhesive. Modern athletes simply lack the raw manliness to grow a decent handlebar. Even in Shavers's day truly top level moustaches were becoming increasingly, ahem, thin on the ground. This can be proven by looking at the sales of moustache wax and men's facial grooming products in the inner city urban populations over the last forty years.

Of course Norton was a throwback in this department, which is why I rate him so highly.

Just watched this fight for the first time in awhile earlier tonight. Not much of a fight actually, I read in Shaver's book that he told Norton at a press conference a few weeks before the fight "KENNY, I'M GONNA DESTROY YOU!" and Norton was visibly intimidated. Well Earnie was right and the only time I ever saw a Black guy's face get reddened without being cut. I can see why he's considered the hardest puncher in history.

Norton famously had confidence issues, he read self help books, sparred LHW’s, wouldn’t look guys in the eyes and had a hypnotist.
