well maybe ernie hits harder, but i believe baer has the (far) better stamina. and also the better chin.
I'd bet a lot on a motivated Baer here. One of the few people I'd risk doing that with when they're fighting Shavers. You're not gonna take Max Baer out with a single shot.
Baer is probably the more sensible pick, but I don't think its a given. Max's defense was terrible, and while he certainly had a set of whiskers, never took a shot from a guy on Shaver's level. Earnie's stamina issues were a real problem, but often overstated. he went a combined 20 + rounds with a peak Larry Holmes in a high paced fight, and took many of his best shots before folding. He also put one of the most durable men of all time on the canvas in that fight, and nearly had him out.
He took quite a few huge shots from Louis who hit pretty ****ing hard. Don't know what you're talkin about there. As for defense and fundamentals Earnie is just as poor, maybe even somewhat worse. Determining the difference in power between the two is difficult. Might give it to Shavers just because i've seen more of him, but remember, ol' max killed someone in the ring with his punches.
Baer, like Jerry Quarry did in '73, would sense the urgency of this one, I believe and would blast out Earnie in 1.
Louis was a composite puncher who took people out with multiple combinations, whereas Earnie left people on ***** street with one shot. Different kettle of fish. Louis was also 21 years old, and had been a pro for all but 14 months, but pummled Baer in only 4 rounds. As for their defensive deficiencies, I think this makes it up for grabs, as Earnie could have just as easily been the first to land. The man you're referring to was Frankie Campbell. He was 5'10", 180 lbs, and took multiple massive blows from Baer. He died after the fight in a hospital.. I'm not sure exactly how much of a testimony this is to Baer's power though, given that he hit a much smaller man with numerous shots, while he was helpless against the ropes. On the otherhand, Shavers has the testimony of both Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes as delivering the hardest punches they had ever taken... For the record, these were two men who survived the combined power of George Foreman, Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Gerry Cooney, Tim Witherspoon, Mike Weaver, James Smith, and Ray Mercer......
Joe Louis? Even if he doesn't hit quite as hard as Shavers he hits hard enough. And his ability to land is a thousand times of what Shavers had.
I read it but don't really see it as perfectly logical imo. Your main point is that Shavers could put people on ***** street with a single shot easier than Louis, where Louis did it with combinations. Well Louis landed every combination in the book on Baer and he didn't go down until he eventually just said **** it in the 4th. Watch that fight and tell me Shavers is going to do to Baer with a single punch what Joe Louis couldn't do with a hundred. Watch the Schmeling fight as well to see how Baer deals with right hand punchers. While Schmeling doesn't have Shavers power he certainly is better than him at landing it but he didn't have a whole lot of success with it. Baer was never EVER put in serious trouble by a single shot. Hell, he was only ever dropped by Louis until his last pro fight. That's the bottom line.
He never got hit by a single shot from a man like Earnie Shavers.... Does that count as a "bottom line" as well? Let's do this. Put a pair of 8 ounce gloves on Shavers, like the ones they used back in the 30's, and feed him a string of 180 lbs men. Do you think that people's perception of his punching ability when contrasted to Louis's would look any different?
