Shavers vs Patterson

shavers starts well maybe landing a good lean right cross down the pipe reeling floyd down for a count. but i think floyds heart,stamina, fast hands an very good punching power would lead to a late round stoppage win

 

It depends on whether Shavers can put Patterson out, otherwise Floyd would keep getting up. I believe the right hand of Shavers would land eventually in the first three rounds with Patterson going down from it but Earnie did not always finish the job.

I see it going two ways, Shavers very early or Patterson later. Floyd was not one to knock over his opposition in two rounds but he could very well get the job done in 4-5 rounds after Shavers is spent from the early attack, that is in case he manages to survive the onslaught.

 

You have to understand that the velocity of Shavers punch before impact is perhaps the fastest I've seen in heavyweight history. That's pretty much where he generated most of his power. Smaller fighters (who generally have smaller heads) are most vunerable when tagged with those types of shots. Forget Liston's punches. If Shavers tagged Floyd as squarely, I see him being out for the count.

 

I would actually favour Patterson here despite what Shavers right hand could do to his chin.

Obviously this is a fight where anybody can go at any time, but if I had to put money down then I would put my faith in Patterson to land the killer blow first. My thinking is that Patterson was faster, and likley to create his opportunity rather than wait for it.

On a side note I would pick Johansen over Shavers but my heart would be in my mouth.

True but shavers would. Shavers punches were more devastating than listons. liston, though a brutal puncher, was more of a clubbing type of puncher. Shavers was more concussive and sharper. I'm not talking about quality of fighters here, liston obviously wins that by a landslide because he was superior in every other aspect. I'm talking strictly punch for punch.

I'm well aware of Ernies power possibly the hardest hitter ever and Floyd's glass jaw.However despite that Floyd was hard to pin to the canvas,he kept getting up! I was simply stating that when he was stopped it was never from one shot. I do agree with you i think Floyd would beat Shavers.

 

I take your point and that of dezbeast above the possibility obviously would be there. I do get a little protective of Floyd,he's one of my all time favourite's!

 

i like floyd by a stoppage win.he'd likely hit the deck but whats new.as for shavers-liston.......bombs away and liston does him in 2

Shaver probably never ko'd a peak top tier fighter a la Patterson. Stallings, Cobb, Mercado, Ali, Holmes, Lyle, Clark, Young, Tillis, Santemonte, Rondon Quarry all survived.
His best name ko wins were over Young (still learning) Clark, Williams, Norton(slipping but still his best ko) Ellis (shot) Smith (good win) and Bugner on cuts. Nothing there to suggest he can ko Floyd.

 

Probably go longer than the Liston fight, but Floyd still gets K.O'd early.

 

Shavers presents Patterson with serious danger; he had the killer punch and arrogantly worked in straight lines which would force Floyd to deal with him, and for a guy that did not lean or 'creak' away it is a problem.

Patterson the young champion could've whipped in a hook to stop Shavers rushing but it's 50/50, knowing how easily either man could get each other going.

Patterson the more rounded contender, like the one who hustled Chuvalo would stand a better chance to inject angles before throwing lighting. He's still playing with a hot stove, but it's more like 65/35 in his favour now.

Patterson to pull it out of the bag early in a tantalisingly hectic affair.
