I don't think it was styles. If my memory is correct, Quarry slipped a right and landed his own. Shavers had an iffy chin and a big right hand that he telegraphed shamelessly.
After the bell rang, Shavers was still tight and cold and the more experienced Quarry caught him with some good shots and the fight was over barely after it began.
I just watched the video. Quarry came out looking to use his right off the Shavers right hand, a real gunslinger fight plan. Shavers wasn't caught cold, not at all. In fact, he landed several good right hands and Don Dunphy notes that Shavers was 'scoring heavily.' Then Quarry landed his right, hurt Shavers and proceeded to punch him silly.
Shavers like many ko artists looked for the early ko and sometimes this approach backfired and was hit by a counter punch. Shavers aggressive approach didn't work this night and just beaten by a better fighter.
Quarry was a master counter puncher, earnie was a glass cannon, he was incredibly powerful but had a chin made of porcelain.
Norton had the same problem, but he destroyed Quarry How bout this KO by Shavers? This content is protected Cosell: “whatever his strategy, he’s paying a price for it”
Quarry fought norton when he was too old and damaged to be fighting, norton was in his prime. Shavers fought norton when norton was getting knocked out by everyone at the end of his career. But also styles make fights and Norton's criss armed defence was good against ali but bad against someone who could break your guard like shavers could.
Quarrys chin neutralized Big punchers like Shavers,Lyle,Foster, and although Jerry was not fast he went to the body and head well and was not ponderous & switched up pretty good. I was ringside for all these fights and add Shavers KO1 Jimmy Ellis prior to Quarry. Shavers manager Don King made his way, his debut into the Big Apple & we all thought that was the last of this guy with the crazy hair. Quarry was not a big man at 6" and 200lbs but he was a giant killer in his own right & had HEAVY HANDS. I would have loved to see Quarry against Big George Foreman, it would have been a test because Quarry loved that kind of challenge against someone who came to him and would exchange. Foreman was more of a solid challenge then Shavers,Lyle,Foster but I would have loved to see the fight go into round 5,6,7 & Quarrys body - head attack & see how the young George's stamina held up. Quarry vs Frazier 1 was a war & Jerry went toe to toe with Joe but Frazier was fresh & an ATG who did not have a long prime. Ali got to Jerry mentally and speed bothered Jerry but those fights were a matter of an edge of greatness vs very good & amateur maturity & solid corners. Quarry was a giant killer & loved the Big Slow Punchers....he owned Shavers, Foster & Lyle
Quarry just flipped the script and outpunched the puncher. Shavers did get a good right hand in before Quarry hurt him though.
Do you think Norton would have been better off going after him right away instead of just standing there and letting Shavers pound away at him.
I felt that once Quarry felt the power of Shavers he felt he needed to go for broke and try and stop him...at Quarry's heart of hearts he was a warrior but style wise he was a counter puncher unfortunately for him he could not deny a good punch up when he realized he was going to be hit
Absolutely true but Quarry was in terrible condition for the Norton fight otherwise he might have won
I would say he would have had a better chance, but the outcome wouldn't have changed, quarry was able to because quarry had the chin of a gorilla that lasted him throughout his entire career, norton on the other hand couldn' take a punch well especially at this point in his career, If you look at both quarry and Norton's resumes Jerry did well against reckless wrecking ball sluggers like foster, shavers and lyle (Frazier not included cause he's a different cut than the rest) while norton did well against out fighters and boxers like Ali and Holmes, the kind of fighters that seemed like kryptonite against him was sluggers like foreman, shavers, Cooney, though it is worth noting that the last two he fought at the end of his career when he should be retired.
