I pick Schmeling...however, Shavers has the power to get him out of there if he lands some hard shots.
I keep going back to the prolonged beating from another huge, hard punching fighter Max fought in Baer. He lost of course, but that fight probably proves Max wouldn’t go down and stay down from the first hard shot Shavers lands.
Schmeling is leagues better in the skills department but he’s not taking too much from shavers. And even though Earnie generally lost to elite technicians he gave a few of them a fair amount of trouble
Max stays out of trouble in the early rounds, comes on in the middle rounds, and takes over and maybe even stops Earnie in a late round like he did against Stribling, Louis (1st fight) and Hamas (2nd fight). Shavers was prone to run out of gas if a fight went into the later rounds.
Interesting matchup! I like Schmeling by late TKO. He was a far, far better boxer than Shavers and smart enough to stay away until the time was right.
I'd have picked Schmeling without hesitation if it wasn't for this fight. Schmeling fought a stupid fight, ploughing straight into Baer all night long until Baer wore him out. If he does that vs Shavers it will be a short night.
