Post #7 on this four year old thread by Shavers-Young I eyewitness poster wolgast should help establish the fact once and for all that it ended in round three. http://cyberboxingzone.com/cbzforum/showthread.php?t=4899
The Akron-Beacon Journal, Earnie Shavers hometown newspaper had a proper review of this fight. Earnie scored a flash-knockdown in the 1st round, over a frightened Jimmy Young, who went down from a glancing right-hand blow, which did not appear to land. The young-Philadelphia Heavyweight, was over-matched and out-classed, as the wind of Earnie's outer-space power floored a scared fighter in the 1st Round. Earnie Shavers was on the offensive, and Jimmy Young was on the defensive. No account report of Round 2. Shavers hurt Jimmy Young early in Round 3, and then dropped him in the corner. It sounds as though Shavers stalked a hurt Jimmy for the rest of the round, until late (near the end) in the round he caught Jimmy with a bomb, and dropped him for the count.
scar t,,,,, One-tough fight to get information on.......WHEW!!! I had to research Philadelphia Referee's who handled bouts at the Spectrum Pete Tomasco Charlie Sgrillo John 'Jack' Fitzpatrick Tommy Reid Hank Cisco Would like to find out the other 'fight purses',,,,,Jimmy Young got $1000 for a beating. Jimmy was counted out by Pete Tomasco, according to files.
or either Lyle/Young fight for that matter. I don't know why Young's fights are so hard to come by. I would sing a random song spontaneously in order to see Shavers/Young 2, great performance by Young.
Problem was, nobody in Philly thought much of Jimmy,,,,,,,,,,,,too bad. And prior to the Shavers I bout, he had not fought in 11-months. And take into the fact, that nobody want to fight him,,,,,,,'to slick'
A little bit of an account of this fight is in Earnie Shavers book, 'Welcome To The Big Time' It was definitely the 3rd Round. The big right hand did it. And Shavers was training at Joe Frazier's Broad Street Gym, 10-days before the fight.
According to Earnie Shavers, He flew in to Philadelphia from California, 10-days before the February 19, 1973 fight at the Spectrum. While training at Joe Frazier's Broad Street Gym, Earnie said that Joe told him Jimmy Young was a cutie, and he was wary of Shavers right hand. It's in Earnie's book.
