Not a gatekeeper, former world champ still rated as a top ten contender who put up great efforts against both of the top guys at 147. Gabriel Rosado and Chisora fit the definition of gatekeeper better. Not quite top ten but good enough to beat most of the guys below that level.
I think you hit the nail on the head. Rosado and Chisora are awesome fighters, great and always fun to watch, and they lose fights clearly. Porter was never that guy i would call a gatekeeper, at best he was on the wrong side of bad decisions, at the worst he lost a few close fights. But fans these days take the judges decisions as the final call.
A gatekeeper in boxing is below the tier of fringe-contender. Gatekeepers are those "names" or "hardy veterans" that a rising prospect usually faces on their way up the rankings before facing other contenders or the top guys. But there is no special boxing dictionary. If you are saying he is a gatekeeper to being an elite fighter, I would say that is accurate. In saying that, you are saying he is a league above being a simple gatekeeper in traditional use of that term.
I don't understand how people can give Spence credit for beating Porter and say that it is his best win and also say that Porter is the "Gate keeper"
Shawn Porter and the word gatekeeper do note remotely belong in the same sentence. Superb fighter Would be interested to know what went on in the camp because to me, Porter looked as good as he's ever done and is by no means finished. So unless he's been cutting corners in the gym ? He's announced retirement but he could still beat a hell of a lot of fighters out there. Also................. I pray there are no morons who after a few months or years pass by try and re-write history by saying that Crawford beat a "washed up" Porter based on the simple fact it was Porters last fight. He beat a very very good version of Porter and deserves full credit.
With better Tactics Shawn could have pushed Spence and Crawford even closer. He was a tad predictable and crowded his own work too much times, but a top fighter and top champion with a nice resume.
Haters trying to discredit Crawford. If TC had lost, these same idiots would have said TC was a hype job. These same haters know that Crawford is in a very good position. He can literally fight, Spence, Thurman and Taylor and cement the #1 spot without argument. Providing he wins. It's so bad some Jackass put Beterbiev ahead of Crawford on his P4P list. SMH
Porter always holds his own and then some against elite fighters, that's not what a gatekeeper is. That's a top level world title contender.
I thought Porters effort against Bud was one of the absolute best of his career. No he's not a gate keeper , that tag would only apply at this stage of his career if he came back and fought guys like Ortiz , Ennis or Taylor . I hope he doesn't have to fight anymore.
Nah Porter is awesome. Bud is just another level. Notice Crawford's haters are no longer claiming he can't hang with the top Welterweights. Spence will get it worse than Porter.
