Anyone else think Porter looked better than Aydin AND Guerrero last night? He took some huge shots and he's one of the best natural athletes in the welterweight division (if not the best). I think they said he ran a 4.5, 40 and benches over 300 pounds (it was either 325 or 350). He also had a number of D1 football scholarships out of high school. Not to mention he was exciting and seems like a good kid. I'm more impressed with him than I was with Guerrero.
He's a tough guy. I was impressed with his effort against gomez. As much as it was a good fight Porter seemed in control at every point. I don't think it was close. I don't think Porter is the second coming but I think he's a threat at world level.
Actually I think Porter showed his limit last night... He takes Waaaay to many flush shots & packs a pillow punch. I wonder if he can make 140lbs? (It would suit his small frame better) At the elite level (WW) he gets KTFO, IMO.
He did get hit a lot but he kept coming which is what impressed me. Plus he fought on through a tough cut. You can improve your defense but you can't improve your chin or your heart. I'm sure Freddie will work on his defense intensively. He's not the biggest puncher but he wasn't throwing pillows at all. He hurt Gomez a few times who is a tough SOB. He showed some crisp combinations and good speed. I want to see him again.
I can see Mayweather beating him up for a tune-up. (Porter is a sparring partner, would be good fight for practice)
Are you saying being young is a bad thing for a fighter who wants to be around for awhile? And like I said, he can work on his defense- his chin is solid. This must have been the first time you've seen him though because he hasn't eaten that many punches in his other fights.
I agree he likes to get in a tear-up a bit too much. wouldn't say he's the type of talent that makes me think "OMG this guys for sure going to be a world champion" (especially in a deep division like WW). But I've been impressed with his development and I think he can be a player in the division.
No, I'm saying it's hard to see him being around for a long time if he keeps getting hit like this and is starting it at an early age.
Porter stole the show imo ..He's a grest prospect ..Athletic durable ..Can't wait to see him progress !
hes pretty fun to watch and looks like his chin really solid. he might improve and maybe win a title or two. i have to agree with Leon tho, if he keeps fighting that way, he wont last long and he most definately wont be undefeated for long. but that solid chin and handspeed will take him places.
