Hello has anyone got any experence with Shevlin gloves Ive been thinking of ordering some but never seen a pair in the uk. Has any one got any experence of Shevlins if so please let me know . Thanks
Very well made gloves, but they may or may not be what you're looking for. They are old school gloves, so it's kind of important to know what that means: The padding isn't shaped - so it's more like a pillow than other gloves. The padding in a pillow, unless it's one of those shaped foam things, isn't usually shaped or cohesive, it's just fluffy and you can shape it as needed around your head. Most modern gloves are shaped, so they have a semi-rigid form; you slide your hand into the fist pocket & just squeeze a little - viola a fist. With these gloves the form comes from how your hand makes the fist. It really isn't too different to sliding your hand into a pillow case and bunching it up as you make a fist- the pillow tends to wrap around your fist in a similar way. This has the added side effect of making the gloves very soft (especially at first). The back of the hand & wrist are padded more than other gloves. The thumbs are a little weird. When I first saw the pictures, I expected these huge, spacious thumbs, with a lot of flexibility. What I got was a thumb with a ton of padding along the back side (not necessarily the tip) and a pretty tight fit. On my gloves it feels like my thumb is being pulled back. Luckily the leather is soft, so it will eventually break in, but the actual time to break it in & warp the leather to be more comfortable on my thumbs is taking longer than expected. The reason for this is probably the thumb attachment, which limits the amount that the thumb can move in the first place. The thumb attachments were such that I was stubbing my thumb with every punch as the padding over the knuckles started to compact. This lead me to cutting the thumb attachments, but i didn't do that till relatively recently. The wrists are probably not what you're used to. This is especially true on the leather velcro strapped gloves. There's no padding on the palm side of this glove (unless you specifically request it with an example picture). The end result doesn't feel as supportive as a Grant or a Reyes, even a Ringside. The strap is very hard to fasten snugly. You can get around this by getting the lace ups and asking for padding on the palm - which will be comparable to other brands. Just be forewarned that if you don't make a special request and/or go with the leather velcro strap, it probably won't feel all that supportive. Like I said at the beginning though, these are very well made gloves. Great stitching & high quality leather. They'll last you a long time if you can get a pair that fits well. Customer service is great, Mona's really friendly and they're willing to work with you.
Thanks a lot for the info I know there old school gloves. Im getting on now just about 37 so these may be the last pair of sparring gloves I buy. Do you think there money well spent or stick with cletos or grants ?. Once again many thanks
Don't really know what to tell you. For me, I really had high hopes for these gloves. See, when I was a kid in the early 80s I had a pair of old school Sugar Ray Leonard signature Franklins. They were pretty nice, at least to a 6 year old, so i thought another pair of old school gloves would be a cool way to go this time around. Shot about 10 emails back and forth with design questions & requests. Waited like 2 months for them. When they came, I thought they were beautiful gloves. Problem is the thumbs on these gloves make me not want to use them. They make nice sounds on the pads, but I don't like the consistency of the padding either. They're super soft so you may like them for sparring. The whole experience made me realize that Grant is my favorite glove company and nobody else really comes close (for me). Currently on week 3 of waiting for a pair of Grants I ordered that aren't expected till September.
Thanks for the info I know what your saying I gru up with the old school style gloves ive still got an old pair hainging up in the gym from the 60s there older than me lol. Ive never tried the grants cus there a ***** to get in the uk and the cletos here are different to real mexican ones. I think i will give them a go worst that can happen is they join the old ones hanging on the wall . Thanks again
Hmm I'm actually looking at Shevlin's site right now, and the gloves really look like good quality and aren't too much. How do they compare to other bag gloves???
i have the training gloves, and a pair of the classic style bag gloves, but not the ultimate bag gloves. I think the ultimate bag gloves might actually be shaped. the old school bag gloves i have are old and used, they're old enough to be stiff, hard, flat, and don't make a good fist. I imagine the super bag gloves should be awesome. They're definitely high quality & the company stands behind their product so if stitching pops or the leather rips, they'll fix them - so they should last for years. If you like the fit of the gloves, then you can't go wrong.
