shin splints

    Rest.There isnt a cure for Shin Splints.Its a common basketball injury.if you get chronic shin splints you need to see a Doctor and quick because this can lead to skeletal muscle atrophy, loss of feeling and loss of movement.Dont even try to run or excercise whilst you have shin splints.All you`ll achieve is aggravation of the inury.Remember shin splints are skeletal muscle injuries.Not a good look if you take your training seriously.

    Been a while since I have had them, but as soon as I notice even a mild tweak I stick the limb in ice water. Sometimes I stick my whole body into an ice bath (just for the hell of it).

    Sticking cold objects onto the skin will do nothing - you are better off putting the limb in cold water.

    After that hammer it with an anti-inflammatory. Naproxen is probably the best of a bad bunch (on average) for this sort of thing.

    After cooling it use heat.

    Agreed non steroidal anti-inflammatorys will work like Ibupofen. (Nurofen)

    Lay off running for a while. I take ibuprofen if it's bad, but I try to keep the anti-inflammatories to a minimum.

    agreed. im by no means a boxer, but i do track and in my experience the better condition u are in, the less problems u have. i used to use ibuprofen and rub pain relief cream on my shins but don't need it anymore.

    i usually run on the beach which i find much easier on the lower extremities although not a lot of people have that luxury. I think shoes make a huge difference as well. i use nike free trainers when doing roadwork and are the best shoes i have ever owned.

    stretching before and after a run is also a must to avoid leg problems.

    Can still work on other forms of cardio, though nothing is the same as running.. I like messing around on a rowing machine.

    How are your shoes ????

    Try --- "PENNSAID" (Diclofenac Sodium) --- its a topical anti inflammary.
    Works pretty good.

    i had an operation on them many years back as mine were chronic but to this day i still get them if i run or walk up hills.

    if they are mild the best way is preperation.

    the strongest /hottest deep heat solution you can find (dr sloans ) being massaged strongly into the shins and ankles .

    this must be done over and over until the muscles are very hot and warm.

    then little 15 min sprint and walk drills on grass.

    by this time your muscles have warmed up enough to do as much running as you can do, albeit stick to grass ..

    if you get them bad then treatment straight after is ice pack/rest and keeping your legs supported above your hips.

    the opertion i had was to cut 3 long incisions in both ankles to let the muscles breath and repair themselves and attach themselves back to my shin bones.

    did not work.

    dr sloans or a mixture of white horse oils/deep heat to make the solution more oily and viscous and massaged in does the trick and allows you to train .

    little tip i always forgot.

    when you have your shower afterwards whatever you do , do not rub your shins dry with your towel ,before your bollox, or be prepared to know what having your balls set light to fells like.

    For what it's worth, R, let me pass along something that's worked for me, beyond my expectations. Though what I experienced is painful stress, the forerunner of shin splints, not true fractures. But, it was enough to make me realize, though, if I pushed it, I'd do serious damage.

    It made me nuts that I couldn't at least jog, so I tried everything to get back sooner: rest, heat, cold, pain killers. But after a few steps, my legs said, NO GO!

    Then I tried this, and it worked immediately: I put tight nopreme sleeves (Ace bandage works just as well, but it's a pain in the ass to put on and take off) on both shins, from the ankle to just below the knee. And I not only can go immediately, go further, but have no aches or pains in my shins, and my legs, when I'm done.

    The key here is that I did this when I had the first twinges of pain, not after being diagnosed with shin splints. Also, no doctor recommended this; it was my own makeshift remedy. But its worked, and I'm not gonna look a gift horse in mouth.

    Might be worth considering if you've not been diagnosed with shin splints yet. You'll know immediately if it relieves the stress.
