Hi, think i may have developed these in my right shin. Just wondered should i pack in training all together, or just drop the running? Problem is when i'm training because my weight is on the back foot, and when i'm doing certain explosive work I can feel it. Although the pain is bearable i'm pretty sure I cant be doing it any good. Also I've started using a kettleball doing squats and swings, would these be effecting it? Thanks. :good
How often are you doing explosive stuff? They need a lot more recovery time. Do your running shoes have good arch support? Tight calf muscles also affect it. Do calf muscle stretches. Toe lifts also help to strengthen the shins. Squats and swings shouldn't affect it.
Thanks for the reply, once or twice a week on the explosive stuff. The main thing I was concerend about was the kettleball workouts. I've found them really useful in building strength. Got decent running shoes. I've got a feeling its cus ive not been boxing for long and that area of my leg hasnt had to work so hard in the past. I'm orthadox so push off this leg.
shin splints can be caused by heel striking while running. instead, toe strike, leading with your chest so your weight is forward, and stretch your leg out behind you instead of in front of you. running is essentially a series of one legged forward falls. you can also strengthen those shin muscles by laying a towel out on the floor and roll it up inch by inch with your toes.
Anyone have any experience of shin/calf supports? Was thinkin of gettin one to ease the pain. Also hill runnings meant to be good for when i'm healed, stronger calf muscles=stronger shins?
I've had shin splints for years and I've found a mixture of correct footware, stretching and building exercises up slowly works the best for me. Also as someone said earlier, try running on your toes so that your calves and ankle take some of the stress off.
I've had shin splints a couple of times. They seemed to be the result of hill running. I just rested completely for two weeks and they disappeared. They were pretty minor though, a friend of mine had to stop playing football for 6 months his were so bad. As others have mentioned, correct footwear is the best method of avoiding them.
Thanks for the advice. Resting up over xmas now. Hopefully be gone after that, missin training already.
