Shingo Wake vs. Pipat Chaiporn (aka Mike Tawatchai), 12 rounds @ super bantamweight

 

Round 1

Wake is circling to his right, casually lobbing wide right hooks at Chaiporn from the outside. Chaiporn stays low and cuts his way in close, bearing down on Wake as he is sticking a southpaw jab, catching him already off balance teetering slightly on the insole of his right shoe, and bopping him on the left temple with a short overhand right, landing obliquely, just barely. Wake down, correctly ruled not a knockdown. Wake is circling and working the right jab. Chaiporn is cutting in on him, body turned 45° clockwise away from him, feeding jabs and single line drive right hands up at Wake's face but not reaching. Wake is holding all of Chaiporn's left jabs in check with his quick right flash jab, shooting it out from shoulder and hip level and doubling up on it without reeling in.

Round 2

Wake is swooping in, clasping his arms over Chaiporn's back, snagging him by the underarms, dragging him forward and then pitching in reverse while letting go to leave Chaiporn's equilibrium stirred up. Wake is taking advantage throwing quick jabs and southpaw 1-2s down the pipe while Chaiporn is realigning himself. Clever but chintzy stuff here from Wake. Spoiling and boxing in spurts. Wake plays a little patty-cake on the outside, flashing his right glove out to intercept Chaiporn's pawing left jab. NICE left cross by Wake, stunning Chaiporn but not deterring him. Chaiporn keeps rolling in, knees bent, in a peekaboo stance, throwing jabs while bobbing and weaving. Wake just cruises outside and lets Chaiporn miss with lunging right hand leads up top, countering with jabs and 1-2s.

Round 3

Chaiporn is walking into quick double jabs and occasional left uppercuts on the broadside of the bottom of his chin. Wake is moving well, able to keep his right arm lain relaxed along his thigh as he leans back to have a look @ Chaiporn. Wake is stemming Chaiporn's advance with sudden explosions of hand speed with the double or triple jab and 1-2, lunging in with them and then darting out, standing tall. Chaiporn is occasionally having success timing his in and out rushes with a high jab or a no-look superman right while slouching forward to drop his head out of harm's way of Wake's straight punches. Chaiporn is only getting in one lick for every 4-5 of Wake's, but he is touching him. Wake seems a little surprised that he's getting touched with jabs while on the offensive, and doesn't appear to like it. No adjustment yet, still pretty upright and rigidly straight & tall on both the advent and retreat, head fixed in place and long neck left extended.

Wake has some of the less flattering tendencies of PTP.

 

Round 4

Chaiporn is getting wiped down now with nonstop chamois flurries. Wake is landing his jab at will on the outside and building off it with left uppers on the body and shoeshines in the face. Chaiporn can do little but shell up and lean forward behind lattice-crossed or vertically bundled arms to block out what he can. Nary a punch edgewise for Chaiporn in this frame. Chaiporn is wobbled a few times by lefts but very quick to recover and respond, keeping Wake honest and dancing around nervously.

Round 5

Chaiporn is caught by a huge 1-2 but keeps bobbing and weaving in. HUGE right hook on the body by Wake. Chaiporn keeps rolling onward. Wake gives him space and stretches out a few probing, measuring-tape right jabs, no snap on them. Chaiporn tries rowing up a few left jabs to obscure Wake's vision and set him up for a line drive right, but Wake is hip to his plan and quick to bat down the jabs with the wrist of his right glove from above. Wake is throwing away double right flash jabs into the air now, with no intent of landing them, just psyching Chaiporn out into shelling up in a peekaboo guard so Wake can jump in and score a powerful left uppercut on the lungs.

Round 6

Chaiporn bowls in a right hand on the waist line. Wake is leaping to and fro, rapping on Chaiporn's gloves and forehead with the right jab in a knocking motion - neither a pawing range-finder nor a stiff and snappy jab, sort of in-between...a "keep you right where you are" kind of shot. Very scrappy round. Wake a little untidy with his uppercuts thrown from too far away. Chaiporn is grabbing him and hurling right hands up and over to land as rabbit punches while spinning Wake in the clinch so the ref can't see.

10-9 Wake, but closer. Messier action like this favors Chaiporn.

60-54 Wake

 

Round 7

Lead left uppercuts by Wake. Leaning over to one side, Wake is throwing his uppers while folded up and then erecting himself only to flood Chaiporn's line of sight with quick right jabs. NICE body work by Wake, preserving distance with smooth footwork, nothing fast or fancy, just efficient, and placing very nice sharp left hands above the belt. Chaiporn is weaving in place, unable to find an in as Wake is scouting and reacting to his every move with plenty of space between them. Chaiporn attempts the right hand up top, crouching as it reaches its apex, but Wake has figured him out and is leaning back and countering down low with the left where he anticipates - correctly - that Chaiporn's head will be.

Seriously can't find a round for the Siamese man yet.

Not even a 10-10, really - and that includes the sixth.

 

Round 8

Chaiporn is putting his gloves up over his eye sockets and dipping forward, letting Wake's easygoing trickle of right jabs just buzz him on the widow's peak or skid off his knuckle padding. Chaiporn is looking for a straight body shot but telegraphing his intentions, winding up as he approaches in a crouch. Wake is just making adjustments to his foot speed as needed to ensure that Chaiporn never gets near him with a punch. Wake is scoring easily on the outside with the right jab, fighting a low, relaxed pace.

Round 9

Chaiporn is accepting what he must do now, throwing lead rights at the body, sacrificing himself and torquing his entire body into the punch and throwing his weight behind it, giving Wake free reign to work needlepoint stitching all over his skull with the right jab while dancing around on his toes dodging most of Chaiporn's body shots with ease. Wake is playing around now, tucking his elbows up and in, arms forming an X over his chest, doing a lot of unnecessary swaying from side to side to make Chaiporn miss exaggeratedly with his lunging rights now. Wake showing off a bit, at least defensively, wasting some energy to do so...perhaps unwise entering the championship rounds? It has been a while since he threw a prolonged flurry in earnest, but whether his gas tank is low or this is a long con possum-play remains to be seen.

Round 10

Chaiporn is ducking under the 1-2 and managing to lower his altitude just enough so that Wake's left crosses sail overhead with no contact, though Chaiporn is front-loading himself nearly into a face-plant, and unsteady as he straightens up from all that forthright weight-bearing. NICE EXCHANGE! Wake got a little greedy and began to stand in and shoeshine on the face of Chaiporn, who got in a very nice overhand right on the jaw. Wake has backed off. Chaiporn is mauling Wake into the ropes, both flailing at each other, almost throwing MMA style downward elbows (unintentionally, just the product of both men clubbing at close range while smothered and in a tight lock, as though all four of their feet were encased together in one cinder block...)

10-9 Wake, but that's one that I could see tempting people to give to Chaiporn, if they were seeking a pity round.
