Shingo Wake vs. Yonatan Guzmán, 12 rounds @ super bantamweight

Into the sixth. Wake down twice in R2 and once each in R3 and R5.

 

Wake floating his right jab out to brush the shorter Dominican's forehead, and getting countered from below as Guzmán slinks away, coiled and ready to strike in a crouch.

Big turnaround in the seventh! Guzmán is forgetting to counter as he bobs in retreat, and Wake is gaining confidence with his kamikaze mission, stalking with an upright stance despite having one eye swollen and surrounded by small lacerations dripping blood into his line of sight. Guzmán down!

More pressure by Wake in the eighth, bypassing Guzmán's few left up-jabs off the hip, easily deflecting them off his forearms and trying like hell for the kayo with straight and hammering downward lefts as his obviously fatigued quarry spends his remaining energy on sliding his feet evasively and occasionally breaking into a quick reverse dash, having blown his entire wad punching in the first half of the fight.

 

9th and 10th for Wake as well, though his right cheek has a cavernous gouge (now stuffed full of Vaseline) just below his swollen-shut eye. Guzmán is karate-chopping outward from his chest with the jab on the backfoot, sheathing the right hand to conserve energy as he shuffles his feet in a sliding gallop. Guzmán down again just before the bell to end RD10, but ruled a slip. Either way, KD or no, his legs are starting to go. He can barely lift them in actual steps anymore, just stropping the canvas with his soles and running from the half-blinded man with the chewed up face stomping after him.

 

Round 11

Wake applying pressure and driving his left cross down behind a probing southpaw jab as Guzmán continues to run from him (or rather, speed-slide away). Guzmán chops out sideways jabs into the air.

Guzmán now yanking his upper body away to dodge only to boomerang in with high lariat rights. Wake blocks and keeps advancing, posture erect, guard up. Wake dropping left after left. Guzmán poking him in the chest with counter jabs and skipping away. Counter right by Guzmán, lapping ashore on Wake's nape and back as he ducks forward. Clinch, with Guzmán putting Wake into position for a jackknife powerbomb.

The ref comes in and interrupts the action. The entire right half of Wake's face resembles a pulled-pork sandwich. He is waved off.

Guzmán wins, TKO.

 

Wake inconsolable even after the crowd gives a standing ovation.

His face is gruesome and still bleeding profusely.
