Murat was still the mandatory but was having problems getting a visa. so if they couldn't work something out, Kovalev would be the next in line. but Kovalev voiced his concerns about being left in the cold if Murat got things sorted on his end and replaced Kovalev for the top spot. Kovalev didn't want to risk it because there was a title shot on the table for him already if he wanted it against Cleverly.

Murat did get his problems sorted. so had Kovalev of not taken the Cleverly fight when it was there, he would have been left out in the cold just like he feared. Cleverly would have signed to fight someone else instead.

Kovalev did the right thing by fighting Nathan.
