Jeffrey Fontanez vs. Alejandro Rodriguez, 8 rounds @ lightweight

It may not seem hard, but try five times fast. :yep

 

Round 1

Fontanez is dropping left jabs on Rodriguez's face while dancing to his left. Fontanez is holding his skinny frame back, long arms folded up but with the top of his guard loosened a bit, gloves wavering to either side. Rodriguez exploits the gap with a right hand. Fontanez circles out, sets up, and plants a straight right lead on Rodriguez's nose. Combos by Fontanez now from mid-range, mixing jabs to the forehead with big scoops to the body. A few miss or slide off Rodriguez's biceps but he is connecting more than Rodriguez, who just paws a left jab into the air. WIDE looping right to the body by Rodriguez. Fontanez drops some more jabs on the brow and sways from side to side. Fontanez tightens his guard up and catches a Rodriguez double jab between his wrists. Fontanez changes direction, making Rodriguez spin in about-face.

Round 2

Fontanez is catching Rodriguez jabs on the arms, hiding behind his fists with his skull tilted in, chin tucked slightly and peering up between his knuckles at his opponent. Counter jabs by Fontanez scoring on the backfoot and moving laterally. Rodriguez swings in wide to the body, missing. Fontanez is circling against the ropes but sliding off them before Rodriguez can pin him, blasting free with short-hop rights over the top. Rodriguez keeps stalking and slugging, missing badly. Fontanez counters with jabs and carefully selected rights in the blank spaces left by Rodriguez's wild punching. A right gets through for Rodriguez just before the bell.

Round 3

Fontanez is covering up and catching the Rodriguez jab on his forearms. HUGE counter uppercut by Fontanez, strapping Rodriguez across the jawline. Rodriguez is approaching with his gloves lowered to his chest, trying to slip Fontanez's jabs but failing. Rodriguez lunges with a right hand and just grazes as Fontanez pulls back. Fontanez works his way in behind the jab and falls away, covering up by curling his long stringy arms in to form a cocoon, keeping out the Rodriguez line drive to the body. Rodriguez walks Fontanez nearly into a corner and starts whipping in hard underhand shots to either side of the body. Fontanez dips either way to catch what he can on the elbows, then sneaks off the ropes.

Round 4

Fontanez is dancing around, bouncing on the balls of his feet, moving to either side and dropping anchor to cover up and let Rodriguez take big headhunting rips. Everything claps onto the Everlast logo. Rodriguez switches to a body attack. Fontanez skirts of the ropes. Fontanez is egging Rodriguez on, encouraging him to bring it. Fontanez isn't throwing any counters. Double jab by Rodriguez, setting up a right hand between the elbows nicking Fontanez's body.

Round 5

Fontanez is standing in and working on Rodriguez's body with uppercuts and chopping rights, keeping his gloves idle in front of his face to discourage head shots. Rodriguez is lunging in with pokes to the body, but Fontanez is getting far more leverage on his and backing Rodriguez off with them. Rodriguez invariably returns for more, trying in vain to crack the shell with his double jab and sloppy right cross. Fontanez circles out to medium-long range and extends some octopus-tentacle jabs into Rodriguez's face.

Round 6

Fontanez throws a hook and quite by accident intercepts a looping right from Rodriguez. Fontanez follows up with his own quick right down the middle before Rodriguez can regroup. Fontanez is rolling his right out behind himself and slinging in uppercuts on the beltline. Mark Nelson warns him for straying low. Fontanez is wrestling in the pocket and shoving Rodriguez off. Rodriguez slaps the body and grabs Fontanez around the backside, clinging until Nelson says to let go. Fontanez multiplies a hook traveling up from Rodriguez's hip to neck, swatting with them and only landing a few cleanly. Rodriguez tries to time him with a right hand. Stiff jab by Fontanez, snapping Rodriguez's head back.
