Perez outboxed Maldonado in the Golden Gloves (trainer Fidel Maldonado Sr. claims "he ran" :yep)

Round 1

Perez circles in close and works a right hand to the body, and some stiff left jabs and quick dragging hooks to the face as Maldonado ducks and moves. Maldonado fires the left hand from outside, and circles off to the left. Maldonado falls in behind a left hand lead and ties up. Perez bounces a right hand off the top of Maldonado's head and the latter complains as though it were a rabbit punch. Maldonado is shimmying his shoulders on the outside as Perez works in with a high jab and gets a straight right chiseled in to the body. Jab by Maldonado, and he holds as Perez works the left to the body.

Well, based on those strategy interviews neither is blessed with the gift of gab but it's pretty clear which one has an IQ in triple digits.

 

Round 2

Maldonado falls in with the left hand, then pops the southpaw 1-2. Perez holds on to him and they spin while clasping each other until the ref forces a break. Jabs across the back of the head by Perez. Maldonado reaches out with his right jab, checking Perez's left on it. Maldonado dives in with a left to the body and holds. Left hand lead out of a crouch by Maldonado, missing and getting parried and countered with the left jab of Perez. 1-2 by Perez inching forward. Double jab, uppercut by Perez. Maldonado lands a counter left. Right hook by Maldonado in an exchange. Clinch. They wrestle out of it. Perez flurries and lands an uppercut to the body. Right hand to the ribs by Perez as Maldonado circles back. Long right jab by Maldonado, blocked. Perez pushes him toward the ropes with rights to the body and a jab up top. Maldonado ducks back against the ropes and is knocked off balance while blocking a shot. Perez keeps stalking and jabbing as Maldonado backs up. Left hand lead by Maldonado, lazy, missing and countered with a body shot.
