Rick Glaser ‏@RickGlaser1 More #boxing destruction from #Showtime's Stephen #Espinoza has dropped the excellent Friday night #ShoBox series. R.I.P. ShoBox 2001-2014 This content is protected
Yeah, this is bad news. Going to keep fighters obscure until their big shots. ESPN has to be happy with the news. I'd expect their market for fighters who will take their salary just increased.
Thats bad news if true. Besides being a good place for fighters to make a name for themselves it also put together nice fights for years. Though, it hasn't seemed the same the last year or so anyways. Hope this isn't true.
In fairness, Showtime is denying this. They have a "ShoBox Special Edition" coming up on October 4 featuring a lot of Al's new signees. If true, this is the final nail in the coffin of Showtime. It was the only series where there was actually a chance for an upset. The only way this is acceptable is if they basically combine this with Showtime Championship Boxing and have more Sat. night cards.
And what's with this Glaser guy? He seems to be an HBO employed, Jim Lampley advised spam bot who does nothing but try to bad mouth Showtime in a very unprofessional tone.
I won't buy this story until it's in black and white. I know they aren't seeing any returns on their Floyd Mayweather investment but CBS has deep pockets.
I'm not blaming Floyd, I am blaming Showtime execs for getting raped by Haymon and being convinced that it was a good business decision. They were the enablers here. Maybe it will be good. Maybe it will be a sign for all other boxing entities to avoid the cancer and cut it out of the game.
Exactly.....Floyd is just doing what he can to bank as much lettuce as he can before he no longer is making a living as a prize fighter. It was the execs at SHO that made the mistake and over estimated what Floyd would produce and give him an iron clad deal that guarantees him $32 milli no matter who he fights. Again....I don't know if this is true or not....but if it is...It's a sad day for boxing because we need another rival to keep boxing networks motivated to give fans the options of watching a better fight if one network falls short of producing a adequate card that fans are seeking.
Showtime needs to cut down on some of it's production model to scale back the cost. They don't need Bryan Kenny. They don't need 6 different analysts. They just need a play by play guy, the hype man, and the boxer commentator. Cutting to the useless time segments of promoting the likes of Broner don't need to happen. I am sure they can save a lot of dough going back to the original Showtime Boxing format.
