    Round 10

Mattice is able to comfortably hitch onto the carousel and keep pinning the proverbial tail on the donkey with his jab. Cruz never quite finds his second wind and gets enough steam to get close. Mattice dancing around him landing straight counters from every angle, nothing hard, but enough.

    10-9 Mattice

    97-93 Mattice

    MD for Cruz

Meh, not thrilled with this. Much of Cruz's work was ineffective,.

I was about to say "every Mattice fight that goes the distance is controversial", but hell, even the Dutchover stoppage was.

A rematch "wouldn't be the worst thing", Steve? Mattice had some "moments"? :dunno

Now watch some doofus-come-lately chime in with "you know, guys, the ShoStats did actually show Cruz with an edge in punches thrown and landed..:crazylick:"

Like, first off, I'm not sure I buy those stats; they had Cruz out-jabbing Mattice at the halfway point, and that's just flat out wrong. Second, even if they were dead-on accurate, that has nothing to do with anything. Fights are scored by RBR distribution, not cumulative points like ballgames, and individual rounds themselves are not just touch-tallies. :deal:

I get why people would be tempted into reaching for Cruz, of course his style is easier to root for - but a lot of what he did throughout was ineffective. Mattice was controlling the distance for even some of the stretches where he looked fragile and made the odd boneheaded tactical error.

People on Twitter blasting Farhood and the judge that had it a draw for not giving Cruz enough credit. :dunno

I dunno. I thought the first two were pretty clearly banked by Cruz, who managed to reach the body fairly consistently. YMMV on its effectiveness, but Mattice didn't do or land a whole lot on the first or second frames, either. Cruz clearly won the seventh and eighth, and it's entirely possible give him the ninth on the basis of a nice closing flourish. If you throw in the sixth- a close round where Cruz came on strong at the end, then 96-94 becomes a feasible score. Personally, I called it a draw. 96-94 either way would have been fine, imo.

Shifting a few places from my card to reach the draw I can actually see...but the people lambasting Farhood and the dissenting judge for not having it wide for Cruz seemed really odd to me.

I forgot to tell you, evidently the Kingry KO gave me a slight bout of amnesia, but... the MD for Cruz wasn't the only hideous scorecards last. As I said before the fight started, De La Hoya not understanding just what a high level Vergil Ortiz is operating on, naively put Alexis Rocha, Ronny Rios' kid brother in with Brad Solomon last night, assuming that he'd be able to walk right through Brad and duplicate the result, instead struggled mightily, dropping between 5 and 6 rounds to Solomon and even with him scoring a KD in the last round, that wasn't enough for him to win on my card, I had it 95-94 Solomon and The Professor who is hesitant to say anything is all that close scored it 95-94 Rocha and was aghast at the scorecards, which were.... 100-89, 99-90 and 97-92 all in Alexis' favor. It was nauseating. Then Mannix argued for a few minutes that this was a new Solomon, vastly improved from the one that was beaten to a pulp by Vergil a few weeks ago.
