Kevin Darryl Newman II vs. Marcos Antonio Hernández II, 8 rounds @ super middleweight

 

...and yes, this is the same Mark Anthony Hernández that dealt Newman his lone professional defeat on the Mayweather vs. McGregor undercard two years ago.

 

Inauspicious trivia nugget, if you're Hernández: since upsetting Newman, he started another rivalry with Jeison Rosario. They fought to a 6-round draw the first time...and Rosario knocked him out in their rematch.

 

Round 1

Hernández is leaning over and painting the belly with quick daubing jabs. Newman is following, cagey at first, keeping his gloves up and letting Hernández tickle his body with the jab. Newman waits, picks his spot, and times a perfect right hand lead, buzzing Hernández. Newman jumps in with a longer flurry, swarming Hernández into the ropes. Hernández is moving in, catching jabs on his wrists (but not without softening the force sending his own fists slamming into his face), and tying up roughly.

Round 2

Hernández is trying in vain to slow the pace down and counter from range, but Newman is leaping in and peppering him, forcing the clinch. Very rough stuff as they clasp and whack, a few elbows/low blows/forearm scrapes and hits on the break. Newman controlling the action with his busy jab, thrown at half-power (sacrificing a bit of snap to boost speed and # of landings). Hernández unable to find space to get off.

Tony Weeks has absolutely had enough of both guys' BS already.

 

Round 3

Hernández is glomming onto Newman and bulldozing him into the ropes, palms clamped onto Newman's shoulders or biceps to guide him, and then wailing away on the body. Newman is able to plug enough power body shots to get himself free, but Hernández immediately repeats and Newman has no long-term situation to escape the quagmire, spending most of the round on the ropes getting thumped downstairs.
