I don't know the odds before the fight, but I always though the fight was 50/50 going in. From a styles standpoint, it wasn't that hard to figure out. Malignaggi freezed Broner every time he threw punches. Broner can't counter puncher and he has poor offensive/defensive footwork. He looks great when guys stand in front of him, fighting at a slow pace, where he can use his speed and better pocket defense. Maidana was known as a guy who threw a lot of punches, so it shouldn't surprise people that his punch output overwhelmed Broner. And when the punches started coming, Broner didn't have the defensive footwork to get away. It was not a huge upset by any means. Broner reminds me of Berto, with less power and better stamina and defense.
Shiiiiit exactly what I was thinking. I was convinced Maidana needed a knockout just to score a draw.
I don't think it was a huge upset, if I knew the odds were 5-1 I would have put some money down for sure
We all knew if it went to the scorecards, Maidana would be ahead in everyone's eyes except the judges. Just like what happened with De Leon, Quintero and Paulie but I think GBP had to change their minds at the last minute and hand in some legit cards because they was worried about a riot after the 2 KD clinic Maidana put on.
For many it was an upset, only I never got why Broner was rated that highly. Everyone knew about (or has seen) the Quintero, PDL and Paulie bouts. And Maidana is clearly bigger and stronger as all 3 of them. Only thing that might have favored Broner was if the style suited him or the judges being bought off. So I either expected a Maidana stoppage (that's what I went with), or a Broner UD (robbery or deserved). For me anything but an upset, but a happy surprise it was that clearly.
