Shogun vs Hendo was a clear-cut draw. Round 3 definitely not a 10-8 Hendo.

I think this was an extremely easy fight to score, every round was cut n dried IMO.

    R1: Hendo 10-9
    R2: Hendo 10-9
    R3: Hendo 10-9
    R4: Shogun 10-9
    R5: Shogun 10-8

    Score: 47-47

:huh I don't really see it as being valid to score it any other way to be honest.

R1, R2 and R4 were just obvious 10-9s to the respective fighters.

R3 could have been a 10-8 to Hendo if he'd managed to maintain his punishment of Shogun on the ground for longer, but he didn't. IMO, a 10-8 round can only occur if it's a one-sided beatdown which stretches over 3-5 minutes (eg Edgar vs Maynard II round 1) or if one fighter does virtually nothing so the other guy gets an extra point just for the extreme level of dominance shown, even if the fight doesn't get close to a stoppage (eg Fitch vs Penn round 3).

The 3rd round could've been stopped by another referee, but the time between Shogun falling to a punch and then Shogun going for a submission was too brief to merit a 10-8 round. The first part of the round was pretty even, then there was a short period of Hendo beating down on Rua, then a sub attempt, a lull, and crucially the round ended with Hendo eating clean shots against the cage.

For me, that simply can't be a 10-8 even though it came perilously close to being stopped.

By contrast, the last round was an obvious 10-8 because, like the 3rd round of Fitch vs Penn, it was just far too dominant for a normal 10-9 score. Dan got mounted repeatedly, got buried under an avalanche of strikes, and barely lifted a finger in retaliation in the entire 5 minutes.

That's my view on it. :good

Anyway, it was the best MMA war I've ever seen, and I'd LOVE to see a rematch at some point, but I wouldn't argue with the UFC if they gave Hendo the title shot next because he did get the official nod. But I really hope he is in the cage with Shogun again before they both hang them up, it would be a ****ing tragedy if they never crossed swords again.

    ****ing epic fight! Miraculous!

If a fighter beats another to the point that a case can be made for stopping the fight, it is legitimate to call that a 10-8. The judges made the call not to award either man a 10-8, so it's a moot point.

Some refs would have stopped the fight in round 3.

None would have stopped it in round 5.

Round 3 was more of a 10-8 round imo.

The strikes landing weren't damaging enough for a 10-8 round 5 imo.

Some judges favor awarding 10-8 rounds for the "complete domination" criterion and others prefer to do so for a fight nearly being stopped. I'm of the later camp but, what the hell, it works either way and in my opinion both 3 and 5 were 10-8s and Hendo still wins if that's how you scored it.

I didn't score any of the rounds 10-8. I thought Shogun got in just enough to avoid it in the 3rd round.

I thought both were stalling a little in the 5th, and understandably so. They had had just fought 4 rounds harder than practically anyone I can think of. Shogun got the mount, the dominant position, and won the round clearly. I just don't think he did enough damage to Henderson to warrant 10-8, and I don't think Shogun went for the kill submission wise because he was too weak and would have lost the dominant position. I think Henderson was content to lay there as long as Shogun didn't hit him too hard, and Shogun was content to hear the final bell.

And this is as fair as scoring the third and the fifth as 10-8. Either both are, because both meet the criteria required, or neither are. Thankfully, the judges got that right for once.

Hendo was out on his feet in R4 and Shogun absolutely dominated R5.

R5 was a clear 10-8 Shogun IMO, Hendo didnt bother trying, you can see him look to the clock and play for time.

Hendo was gassed. That big uppercut that Shogun hit him with didn't even drop him. Henderson, on the other hand, succeeded in KDing Shogun and did a **** of a lot more damage in round three than Shogun did in round five. Henderson was in control of the first three minutes of the fourth before he gassed. That wasn't nearly as clear a round for Shogun as people are making it to be. IMO it could have been scored 10-10. And if you're going to score the fifth round for Shogun based on the position he was able to maintain purely because Henderson was exhausted, then you've got score the third round 10-8.

Henderson was in control for 18 minutes of that fight. Shogun didn't get anything going until Hendo was totally exhausted, and he still couldn't capitalize. A Henderson win is the right decision IMO.

Popkins, even you know you're talking a lot of shite here. There is a case that can be made for the draw, but to say it was clear cut is just sour grapes from you because the guy you wanted to win didn't. Hendo had Shogun in more trouble in the 3rd than Shogun had him in the 5th.

I thought draw, but I could have given the first 10-8 yo Hendo, but it would have been 10-9 in Rio, no doubt about the 10-8 for Shogun in the last round.
