Shogun vs Machida...Your final verdict ?

striking - Machida is a bit better than Shogun..... but Shogun is outstanding.
Shogun is better on the ground than Machida but Machida is outstanding.

But.... i have question marks over Shogun's conditioning.
So i think Machida will win because of Shoguns conditioning.

However if Shogun's conditioning is right, i will say its goddamn close.

 

Machida in dominating fashion. Quite surprised by the faith in Shogun, who I like more and would prefer to see win.

 

I would be very happy to see Shogun win and return to dominance, but in reality, his style is the sort of thing Karate technicians should dominate. Shogun is very offensive, he takes many risks and can be a bit wild, all things the discipline of Karate thrive on.


In fights like this, its not necessarily about closing the distance, but about controlling the distance and beign the one who decides where and when the fight takes place. This is something Machida is masterful at.

I like Shogun, and he has a chance, but that chance is more reliant on Machida making mistakes, instead of him taking it to Machida.

 

Im picking Shogun on the assumption that he is back to his best, he looked mighty smooth vs Chuck, his timing looked **** hot.

These 2 are the top 2 LHWTs in the world IMHO & if 1 guy isnt 100%, the other WILL win, I expect both to bring their A game for this one tho.

Machida UD or Sub late. Shogun's aggressive style should play into the hands of Machida but I don't think Shogun will be knocked out. I'm still not sold on Shogun's stamina. I can see something similar to the Griffin fight happening. When the fight is taken into the late rounds, Shogun could very well gas and Machida will take advantage either sinking in a submission or coasting the final rounds to a UD.

It seems to me that people are being quick to jump back on the Shogun bandwagon. He's getting alot of props for taking three rounds to take out an ancient Coleman (and looking cack doing it) and KOing a very faded Chuck Liddell. There are still question marks over him imo.

 

That is a ridiculous statement.

While I definitely favor Lyoto in this one...it is goofy to say that any worldclass fighter doesn't have a chance. After all,....it's MMA.

 

I think Machida subbing Shogun is very unlikely; the other points are all very good.

Its so difficult to cut off the ring, well cage, in the octagon. This is MAchidas big style adv. over eveyone in the UFC. On recent form you have to make LM a very firm favorite.

 

Well Griffin did it and Machida's ground game is far better than Griffin's. Although, I will stress that I only see Machida subbing Shogun in the same situation i.e. Shogun gasses. Other than that Machida UD.

Ok, I have to say that I agree it's possible for Machida to sub him late after a sustained beating, especially if Shogun's cardio isn't on point.

I certainly don't agree that Machida has a better ground game than Forrest though. Forrest combines technical proficency with a dominating physicality that breaks down his opponents; he showed that combination against Shogun. Forrest always seemed one step ahead by stopping one of Shoguns favorite technique of turtling up and rolling through to guard or into a leglock.

Machida is certainly good, but he tends to be a bit rushed, which is highly ironic given his overall style. He really seems to prefer to either just quickly go into a flurry of strikes for the finish, or to quickly try to lock up a submission; both are of course not bad in and of themselves, but he tends to not make sure to secure positional control, which leaves openings for opponents to seitjer scramble to their feet, which obviously he doesn't mind, but where it can hurt him is if the opponent is able to work for offense from the bottom, like Tito's triangle.

One aspect Machida is definietly better at grappling wise though is a safe defensive guard; which Forrest has repeatedly been punished for lacking (Rashad and Jardine.)
