What short armed fighters do you know of that have had success boxing? I mean boxing as in fighting from a distance, using footwork or movement.. not like tyson or hatton who look to get in close... or do they all pretty much look to get in close?
It would be dumb for a fighter lacking reach against almost all opponents to adopt a style of fighting at range
doesn't mean its not possible especially if the fighter has speed and power and tremendous athletic ability and the ability to outsmart and be clever?...
Sergio Martinez could be a candidate. He doesn't have really short arms but he's not especially gifted in that area and he fights on the outside against bigger guys.
Fighters who with short arms using range have to relive on handspeed but more importantly footspeed giving them teh ability to lunge in then be out of the way befor they get hit.
Even though in general it is normal to have a reach that is equal to your height, in boxing this is considered having short arms because of the obvious advantages in having good reach. So fighters that spring to mind that have relatively short arms are Gamboa, Tszyu and Cotto.
Rocky Marciano produced great power with his short armed blows. Joe Frazier had a short reach compared to his greatest rival, Ali, but was pretty effective against the best of all time. Jerry Quarry had a shorter reach than even Frazier, but still beat Floyd Patterson, Ron Lyle, and Earnie Shavers. Willie Pep was usually giving away reach, but was so quick and skilled , his opponents couldn't take advantage of Willies short arms.Mickey Walker was a beer bloated welterweight fighting heavyweights to some success , and his reach wasn't bigger than anybodys.
Quite the contraty, he has really long arms, you wouldn't believe it, but he had a reach advantage over Pavlik. Now to answer to the op: if you have short arms, you have to get close one way to another to place punches, but sometimes you can see short reached fighters working on the outside, like Gamboa, but that's not the most effective way.
manny pacquiao wlad klitschko has very wide shoulders, but his arm length is shorter than lewis's,bowe's...
Miguel Canto Alfonso Lopez Gilberto Roman Alberto Davila Davey Moore (Featherweight) Stevie Johnston Nicolino Locche Ralph Dupas Not necessarily short arms, but for the most part short/squat fighters who were first class technicians.
Great Post to take it further what have been the best examples of a boxer with a short reach outboxing someone with a longer reach (all done ...or most done ..at range) as a boxer with very short arms I always like to think that I dont always have to smother a guy and get inside to win a fight.
