I understand that this thread is more suited for the training forum, but I appreciate the classic section's knowledge more :thumbsup. Now that I can get back in the ring, I've decided to change my style up. Since I'm short for heavyweight (5'11 ish) with decent speed, I've always been a countering pressure fighter who prefers the inside. However, my fragile left wrist makes me a bit nervous about banging with another big guy and another wrist injury would surely jeopardize my music career. Therefore, I want to become more of an outside fighter. Are there any boxers who consistently outboxed fighters who had the reach/height advantage? I know Kalambay-McCallum 1 is a great example of this, does anyone know of any other fights or fighters?
Watch film of Jersey Joe Walcott, Chris Byrd, Ezzard Charles, Max Schmeling, Archie Moore, Roberto Duran, and Manny Pacquiao. You've got to be good at setting traps and forcing a guy to open up IMO, feinting a lot, and attacking body. Work on your sharpshooting in and out, and making the most of your opportunity by putting bodyweight into your punches.
Miguel Canto is the definitive answer to this, but for a more attainable basic precision textbook approach used in the lack of the truly great space perception skills somene like canto had, then Check out Alberto Davila fights.
All great responses, I'm already learning about the art of outboxing folks! For anyone else who's interested, Harold Johnson was great at making taller guys reach for him so he could counter.
good man. im in a similar situation, im 5'8 middlishweight, and not a puncher enough against all the 6'2 dudes who are in the gym. smaller men who outbox bigger need to not really outbox but out fox the opponent. the taller guy would want to counter and use his height so he would be prone, if you start circling then he would have to reset his stance, that way he is working for you. try fienting if he throws then you throw your own. and because of your height you can walk inside and outmuscle him in the clinch where the lanky arms become less of a threat because your a smaller target they will have to maybe not bend down but will have t adjust to you instead of the other way round. and combinations are your best friend/s i would suggest pernell but he is a genius at what he does so i don't know if it would help.
Qawi , Toney , Montell Griffin , Charley Burley , Chris Byrd and Orlin Norris , maybe Adamek and Eddie Chambers can be used as recent examples.
Albert Davila was a short guy who could outbox most guys. Pernell and Buddy Mcgirt are perfect examples of master boxers that where short. Someone Mentioned Canto and Chiquita. Niccolen Locche Montell Griffith excellent boxer in his prime, outboxed Toney twice, and was frustrating the hell out of Jones(first fight) before winning on a DQ. Was past it when he fought Tarver and his other losses but he was also 7 inches taller.. Learned from the best Eddie Futch!! Buster Mathis Jr -on a lower leverl, not a top guy but a gatekeeper.. Only 5-11 with zero power but, he was a solid guy cause he could box his ass off. Marlon Starling was kind of short and a helluva boxer. Jesse Leija- In his prime an excellent boxer see his fight win over Nelson, was masterful. Nichollone Locche Dulio Loi Sven Ottke Archie Moore Jose Napoles Paulie Malinaggi Curtis Cokes Harold Johnson
