Archie Moore ? how many times did he outbox guys taller than himself ? Ezzard Charles was his daddy and not much taller , not to mention all the cases in which he was schooled or destroyed by shorter guys.
Kudos on the Leija shout out. Had a fair few good wins, and a couple of great performances in losses, and I cant remember him being the bigger man. Him taking Bojado to prizefighting school past his best and outgunned is a favorite fight of mine.
Yey i always felt Leija was better than what he was given credit for.. Underrated compared to other fighters that get mentioned more. Great win for Leija, but i was also dissapointed with Bojado.. After an early setback, i thought he would get it together and live up to his potential. Even when he was old Leija would still whup some young guns,, I remember when he was spanking then undefeated and heavily hyped Camacho jr,,Should have got the win cause Camacho made some lame excuse as to whyhe couldnt continue so it was a no contest.. Also was beating then prime Ward (went to TD)as well as top ranked Ivan Robinson and should have gotten the decision over Then top rated Juan Lascanzo. All fights where Leija was brought in as the opponent to pad these guys record... Just shows you how good he was in his prime... Looked outstanding when he dominated then JL top dog Azumah Nelson in the 2nd fight... Expected a long reign from him,,but then he ran into another young tiger Ruelas who looked like a young Duran that night.... I always felt Leija would have been all wrong for Gatti at JL.. AT JW Gatti was too big and still one of the top dogs,,, Age had finally caught up to Jesse James....
Oh i guess you never heard of then GIant HW 6-4 Nino Valdes, who Moore beat two times. Also outboxed the taller Maxim 3 times as welll as countless hw contenders, who were taller than him...Also schooled then hyped prospect ALejandro lavorante before kayoing him late. Hey Franky why dont you stick to your David Tua,Oliver Mccall trivia, facts and nuhuggery.
Orlin Norris stands 5'11" with a 70 inch reach and limited power. Yet, he split a pair of SDs with 6'5" Tony Tucker, and won six straight NABF Title fights during his late 1980s prime. In fact, Orlin is the second winningest heavyweight in NABF Title history. (The number one heavyweight in NABF Title history? Muhammad Ali!) When Greg Page challenged him for it in 1989, he came in at a low for him 220 pounds. Orlin schooled him in a masterful performance, and I thought he might be just the guy to successfully befuddle Tyson. Later, when turning 30, Orlin would follow Ocasio's lead, drop down to cruiserweight, then win NABF and WBA Titles at 190, before moving back up to heavyweight and engineering his win over Tucker. My favorite example of a short guy taking a taller opponent to school is when cagey 5'8" LW switch hitter Tyrone "Butterfly" Crawley dropped 5'11" amateur star "Rockin'" Robin Blake from the undefeated ranks in Blake's native Levelland, Texas. Standing flat footed in mid ring, the featherfisted Crawley (seven stoppages in 22 career wins) traded blows with Blake on his own terms, and demonstrated a clinic on the art of hitting without being hit. Blake's hometown fans were shocked and stunned into awed silence, and not a peep was to be heard when the lopsided decision was announced in Crawley's favor. Howard Davis, Jr. was one very impressed viewer at home. I'd like to see this one on youtube.
Orlin Norris seems to be a mirror image of me (except I like to think my right hand has a bit of pop ), I'll be sure to look at some of his bouts. Thanks for all the help, this is why I love the classic forum.
When Norris dropped down to Cruiser he had good power.,,Funny when i see muscle bound guys who cant punch(at Hw).
Besides all the great Nicolino Locche's fights where he made taller guys look foolish, I nominate Greg Haugen vs Jimmy Paul.
Vilomar Fernandez was a guy I enjoyed watching. His reach was listed as low as 59 inches (I was most often under the impression it was around 65 inches, still a short reach), yet there were times when he outboxed a peak Arguello, and here he has his moments against the 5'11" Hilmer Kenty. A gifted boxer with springs for legs who made few mistakes. Most believe he defeated the 5'10' Howard Davis, Jr with a surprising show of aggression. Many believe he deserved the verdict over Kenty. Davis thought Vilomar was ahead of a peak Duran after 12 rounds. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNZrVBrE5jo[/ame]
Qawi and Moore have been rightfully mentioned but not really too much specific fights on Qawi have been mentioned. Qawi was well-rounded where he could run through guys like Spinks or outbox them like in Saad 2. His fight against Occasio most likely was a robbery. Good mentions. Even though Tarver & Taylor were close to Hopkins' height there's no doubt that he outboxed them completely(Taylor in the first fight as the rematch was close). Though there's no footage unfortunately, Pep put on a clinic on Saddler in the second fight of the series.
