Last nights action has given me cause for some REFLECTION. As a fan of boxing for thirty something years I have developed an acutely accurate eye for a shot fighter. Or I thought I had. I grew up on boxing in a different era, modern nutrition, advanced training methods, ever greater understanding of human physiology, have extended careers and given top fighters a second wind now past what used to be the end of their careers. I didn’t think old delboy could last more than a few rounds in there with a relentless prime elite talent like BRUTHA USKY last night. I figured lee selby was shot after recent performances , and that high tempo Aussie kid had enough intent and venom to put him away. I’m doing these guys a disservice, underestimating their sheer will and strength of character. Shot fighters are an inevitability. Shot will always be the end of the line for every fighter, but I’m going to give these fighting men the benefit of the doubt in future. It’s the least they deserve.
What do you class as Shot? Did we really see a new an improved Chisora?? I don't think so he has done the 12 a good few times before. He was slow, flat footed, telegraphed and clumsy. Same Chisora! He did switch stance for about a minute which was a nice watch.
Good question and not one to easily answer, it’s a subtle analysis. Guys who look OLD in the face. Tired in the ring. Lost a step, a KO waiting to happen. Top level guys who are done at the top level: Kell Brook is a shot fighter. Amir Khan is a shot fighter. Lucas Browne is a shot fighter. Gavin Rees is a shot fighter. Alec Povetkin is a shot fighter. Carlos Takam is a shot fighter. KubRAT Pulev is a shot fighter. most of these guys are mid thirties plus and have a lot of miles on the clock, a few losses, usually by KO, and are a shadow of the fighter they once were. It’s not an exact science, clearly.
There are different levels of shotness, but the one that sticks out in my mind recently is James DeGale against Chris Eubank Jr. Now that was the picture of being shot.
Yep - Brutal KO Vs AJ - Two wars with Chisora - Knocked down heavily by Parker and Rivas - Brutal KO vs Povetkin I can see him beating Povetkin cause Alec is also shot but Whyte is done when he steps in the ring against a fresh young powerful hitter
That's a good example. Also worth pointing out that past prim doesn't equate to shot, which people sometimes forget. I think the obvious signs of it are not pulling the trigger (slower reactions, not seeing the gaps etc) and reacting very badly to shots that normally wouldn't bother you so much.
Being shot means someone who was performing at at least a decent level and has now lost a lot of his attributes, through age or injury over time
I guess it depends how highly you rated Whyte, I don't think he is shot I just never thought he was all that good.
David haye was absolutely shot to pieces body wise in both bellew fights. Majority still thought hed have way to much to beat bellew though especially before the first fight.
Some poor examples of being shot above, Povetkin and takam are probably not as good as they were but definitely not shot. James degale against Eubank as mentioned, now that is shot.
Povetkins shot to pieces with just a great set of finishing punches left Credit to him as as his last fight showed sometimes thats all thats needed Every other aspect of his game however has diminished
