I’ve been saying for ages that Whytes punch resistance has completely gone, his chin has never recovered from the AJ knockout, never mind the Povetkin one
This is a pretty good definition of "shot" which can be interpreted several different ways. Fighters on the downside of their career are not necessarily shot, just on the slide. I generally think of shot fighters as those who cant pull the trigger on punches they would have earlier in their career and/or their punch resistance is gone. Ive seen Povetkin mentioned in this thread several times. I think its obvious both his punch resistance and legs are going. The positive for him is he still has his power, a solid boxing fundamentals to fall back on, and his ring IQ. Now this wont save him forever as the problems ive pointed out are going to get worse, but it can keep him in fights others at his stage wouldnt be competitive in.
You've got to admire Povetkin for still being able to operate at a decent level at his age. Essentially a blown up Cruiser brutally icing a Heavyweight contender, arguably the highest rated non belt holder in the division by many, Povetkin obliterated him with that punch. I've gone soft on Povetkin, I get why he took PEDS because how else could he compete in a division full of monsters, many who were or are also juiced to the gills themselves at times. He is a very gracious fighter too and I like that, I hope he beats Whyte again if it ever goes ahead, I'm bored of that massive melon head, it's absolutely huge is that head of Dillians, it breaks my concentration because I can't quite believe what I'm seeing.
If I had to predict a fighter who will be classified as shot in his next fight I'd say Gennady Golovkin. He showed cracks the last time out.
Lucas Matthysse was shot to bits when he fought Pacquiao. I knew a few rounds into the Vargas fight that Canelo had taken Khan’s soul and he was nothing but pig feed going into the Crawford fight (Brook is nowhere near as done as Amir is) The worst I’ve seen was the remains of Hasim Rahman being fed to young Povetkin, the poor wee fella could hardly walk to the ring never mind take a punch. James Degale against Eubank is another good example.
There will be no reference to shot if Eh Day promotes the Khan v Brook Box Office PPV Mugths special. Both will be in their prime, best shape ever with long standing beef etc settled in the ring. The fight we all want to see and more importantly a bargain at £19.99. The man can sell a parking ticket back to a Traffic Warden
Quigg was shot long, long before he retired. Someday they’ll use his IFL interviews as an example of brain damage. And before anyone starts, no, I don’t mean that in a snide way. He was punch drunk and slurring his speech for years. Have a look at the Frampton build up press and then about 18 months / two years later. It’s awful to watch.
Tom Little was done and dusted against Allen Babic, he looked nowhere near the same fighter that was gasping out of his arse against Tom Dallas in Prizefighter a few years back. oh wait..
Degale vs Eubank is probably the best recent example of a shot fighter. He was an absolute shell of himself that night but in fairness to him he still toughed it out but he took a beating.
Punch resistance? Nope. Is he over the hill? Yes, long years ago he is over the hill. Yeah. Power and precisity + skills are last thing they could loss. He now is OLD. Povetkin might KO anyone if he had landed properly. IF. He is already old and it is not 30-34 years old his version. Probably might retire soon. Maybe should when he turned 37. If he will land, it still will work but he is 41 not 30 - 34.
