What I mean by box once is that they at least once, no matter what the age, train and spar. Maybe even have one fight? :think
I don't believe Lampley, Merchant, Iole, or Dan Rafeal have boxed before. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyone know writers who have boxed?

Yes. Half the crap they say and believe shows that they are boxing nerds not even minimal level participants.

it should be the case for every sport if that is how you feel, but how do you justify this to someone who just wants to be a journalist and has no desire to participate? Alternatively why just for boxing? Particulalry with boxing there would be many who would like to be involved, but not actually participate.

Merchant may not have boxed, but even under 160 pounds, he was a NYC high school football terror in the early '50s, recruited by Oklahoma, the biggest powerhouse in the nation.

There may be snow on the roof, but there's plenty of FIRE beneath.

Used to see Ray (he was a magnet for crowds) around NYC in the early '40s, when I was about ten or eleven. After seeing him win the vacant welter title in '46 against Tommy Bell with my dad an uncles ringside at the ol' Garden, we attended all his fights in the tri-state area, plus watching him train at the Uptown Gym 'n various camps in the Catskill Mountains.

He gave me boxing tips that I treasure. Sadly, I was at his last fight, against Joey Archer, in the ol' Garden in '65.

u know what that a great idea, maybe they should be required to put on some pads and go 3 rounds before ever talking , they act like punches dont hert. Calling fighters pussies when they have never test the waters 99 percent of people couldnt engage in boxing

For all intents and purposes, R, there were only TWO SPORTS in NY: baseball 'n boxing -- both splashed on the front pages every day. Plus, NYC -- with Madison Square Garden 'n Stillman's Gym -- was the center of the boxing universe.

I would say from what they say people like merchant 99% have never boxed. From the way they are always criticizing and say dont train hard enough feather fists no heart etc.
