Should Boxing announcers and journalists be required to at least box once?

good to see another hip hop fan.

anyway, i think one trainer, one former boxer, and one old drunken goofball or sometimes a shy young nerd is a great combination.

Should oncologists have cancer at least once before they treat, should psychiatrists overcome a nervous breakdown before having patients, should zoologists live like an animal before commenting on them?

Not really, Roy Jones was great but I could do without the Lewis and Foreman commentary a lot of the time. Boxers should be brought in to analyze from there point of view but boxers are nuthuggers for certain styles like everyone else. Sugar Ray Leonard was good as well. I believe having a "professional" group of journalists keeps everyone honest and objective. When the line gets more blurred you will have more "favors" done toward one group of fighters or others.

First off hell of a thread !. 2nd I know exactty what you refer too . I myself have been a fan of the sport for yrs but it was only until I put head gear on and a mouth piece and and got in the ring to realize what it takes to be a boxer . And until you get in that situation how can you be an expert on the subject ? Imo I say hell yes or at least show a little more respect and nuetrality when commenting on these athletes !

To me I prefer an expert opinion such as a Roy Jones ,Antonio Tarver ,Manny Stewart over the likes of Dan Rafeal who I strongly believe that the only sport he's ever been involved in had to do with competive eating !But that's my opinion .

I have no problem with their play by play but when you go overboard like a Larry Merchant you would hope he showed more respect on the air and kept half his hateful ramblings to himself !

  11. I don't know how they do it, just sit there night after night talking about something in detail and they have never done it. :nut

I disagree. Sometimes it is best if an announcer has never boxed but is knowledgable, that way they won't let hard work in the gym influence them to give praise to people who objectively do not deserve it. I feel the same way with football, basketball, or any other sport.

Sometimes it takes a view from someone not entirely entrenched in a sport to point out things that those who have always been in it, don't see.

Nobody who trains as a boxer wants another one called a tomato can or a bum, but sadly in the general gist of things, that is exactly what some fighters are. McBride was a tomato can, McNeely was a bum, etc..

There are only two guys who really get under my skin: Wally Matthews and Al Bernstein. Both are ridiculously biased toward certain fighters.

Kellerman is still not very good, but he does seem to be improving.

Merchant is a living legend, and the best in the business, but every now and then he makes me asked the people around me, "what ****ing fight is he watching?"

I'm not sure that actual boxing experience would make much difference.
