Hey guys. An idea popped into my head when pondering why Boxing seems to be dying a slow death. Now before defending against that statement let me stress it is not an attack. I love boxing... If I didn't I wouldn't be giving thought to what kind of ideas might reinvigorate the sport... Let's face it, at the end of the day all sports need serious fan interest, buy in, buzz, excitement.. tickets and PPV events must be sold. MMA is doing well in many of these areas.
So this idea came to my head and here is an exerpt from another post i made in the MMA section:

Maybe boxing should consider MMA style gloves.. the fights would be a lot shorter (probably), some of the defensive blocking techniques would be rendered a bit useless.. but it would generate buzz and excitement back into the game. It was bare knuckles in the old days anyways. and MMA gloves are already sanctioned so why not... Keep all the boxing rules just change things up a bit.
Would anyone else like to see a boxing match using MMA style gloves?

I am no expert, but I think boxing needs "something" to just get people talking again... Let's face it, it IS more fun to watch two guys standing up and fighting and seeing who can knock the other guy out... it more closely replicates what is experienced in a street fight standing up.. (no glove real estate with which to block shots)..

This in and of itself would do NOTHING to fix the myriad of other issues and i'm sure it would cause for debate. But is it not possible that this idea could be the catalyst for a new era for boxing... super tough fighters who garner the imagination of the fans...

Just a creative thought from someone who loves both sports.

Any boxer who has a KO ratio over 80% would probably kill or mame most of his opponents.

They actually did a study trying to find a link and they were surprised to discover that hitting someone with 12oz gloves causes more brain damage than with just a bare fist.

    spandex and mini trunks
after fights the boxer has to call out someone from behind scenes and low and behold they come out with the whole crowd going crazy
also boxing fans must bring their own signs with them to events so they can show there distain for certain fighters
nd all fighters have to have there own finishing punch which will end the fight if they land it.

    YEAH RAWK ON :ldevil

:-:)patsch **** off. i like to see combinations i like to skills and i like to see effort. ufc has a distinct lack of this.

In a 2007 article in The Independent (UK), sports historian Nicholas Hobbes explains that gloves were introduced to make competitions bloodier and briefer. Gloves distribute a blow, but they also add weight to a punch, making it more destructive:

The Marquess of Queensberry rules took off not because society viewed the new sport as more civilised than the old, but because fights conducted under the new guidelines attracted more spectators. Audiences wanted to see repeated blows to the head and dramatic knockouts.

By contrast, the last bare-knuckle heavyweight contest in the US in 1897 dragged on into the 75th round. Since gloves spread the impact of a blow, the recipient of a punch is less likely to be blinded, have their teeth knocked out or their jaw broken. However, gloves do not lessen the force applied to the brain as it rattles inside the skull from a heavy blow. In fact, they make matters worse by adding 10oz to the weight of the fist.

A full-force punch to the head is comparable to being hit with a 12lb padded wooden mallet travelling at 20mph.[...]

As the bare-knuckle campaigner Dr Alan J Ryan pointed out: “In 100 years of bare-knuckle fighting in the United States, which terminated around 1897 with a John L Sullivan heavyweight championship fight, there wasn’t a single ring fatality.” Today, there are three or four every year in the US, and around 15 per cent of professional fighters suffer some form of permanent brain damage during their career.

Yep I've actually heard the same thing... It has to do with the amount of sustained punishment that you absorb because of the pillows you are forced to wear...

A punch that may just hurt you with boxing gloves would probably put you out with just some padded wraps.. It may seem more barbaric but the fact is it really does cause less long term damage..

I don't buy it, studies conflict all the time, just research scientists trying to get paid. Without gloves there would be tons of broken bones, limbs, organs, deaths.
