Should boxing have a limit on number of punches thrown?

A hard cap is ludicrous. I think it would be fair though if you were to give point deductions is you throw X amount more than your opponent does though. Watching guys throw twice as many punches as their opponent is unfair and cheapens the sport.

 

According to my rule book,if the allocated punches are used up in the first minute and a half then a dance off will ensue which will be played off to ‘living la Vida loca’ by Ricky Martin and scored on the 10 point must system.

Negotiations over purses and dates,venues etc will include the shape of the fight arena.

The triangle,square,rectangle,hexagon,diamond and so on will be available instead of the boring old smelly ring that everyone is fed up of.

A popular option may be the phone booth,an ironic nod to the commentator’s cliche from the ugly past when fights were ruined by ‘overpunching’.

If you aren't happy with the inevitable direction boxing is headed, then you need to get yourself another sport to follow. Maybe that MMA stuff with grown men rubbing their oily chiselled pecs on each other is more to your liking?

Myself, I think the OP has an amazing idea and that we need additional criteria in order to score a fight than just the amount of punches thrown. Things like trunks, moustaches, are certainly valid standards. That will give underrated guys like Spike o Sullivan and his epic stache and Amir Khan with his rhinestone trunks, a fighting chance. People could get hurt, ffs.

Other suggestions: ring walk. What music is played? Does the one boxer have fire dancers and smoke and the other not? That's a 10-8 round, right there.

No, no the ref isn't just for old times sake.
You're gonna have the next Andre Ward in there, writing "Low blow, hold, elbow to back of head, subtle headbutt and elbow on the roll out."
You have to have a referee in there to ignore it and let him continue to write it or else we would truly lose all sense of the sport that once was.

One day, as boxers do their entrance to fireworks, Elvis impersonators and the Cirque Soleil, and settle down to their respective desks to do battle, twirling their 'staches, THIS THREAD will be recognized as the start of the new era.

 

It would be better than awarding rounds and fights to boxers who merely throw more punches without regard for defence, as so many judges and posters here do.
