Overall he is still the best fighter in the 168-175 range. Its hard to say a man should not keep fighting when he is one of the best fighters in the world and could still further his legacy. With that said, he is past the point where he needs to prove to the American crowd he isn't just your stereotypical cherry picking Euro fighter, so if he were to retire now he would be in a great position. *And personally, i think he will have at least one more fight, he is just too good a fighter right now to retire.
I dont see why he would have to. I mean sure he can say Dawson is out there but what happens if he beats Dawson im sure someone else will be emerging and calling him out. Theres almost always going to be someone. IMO the demand is that big for that fight yet I didnt even have Dawson beating Glen Johnson id like to see that rematch 1st same with Hopkins-Calzaghe if he continues as I had Hopkins winning
yes... but only if it is Chad Dawson, a B-Hop rematch (which he is saying will never happen, or a fight with the winner of Taylor vs. Lacy.
I dont think he should. He'll never be able to prove how great he is now because he's past his prime. He shouldn't risk his legacy by letting some young fighter catch him while he's on his decline. Besides, he's already Mayweather III, no matter who he beats, it'll never be good enough, they'll find excuses, and they'll have someone else.
Maybe the fans will still have certain issues with him, but the sportswriters will bow down before Joe Calzaghe if he beats Dawson. There is literally nothing else those guys can say. They set it up that way. Not a bad deal if you ask me. Dawson isn't unbeatable. Calzaghe is supposed to be good enough to roll over Dawson. He'll get to show how smart and skilled he is..
Potential fights... Roy Jones: Done. No rematch. Bernard Hopkins: Done. No rematch. Mikkel Kessler: Done. No rematch. Kelly Pavlik: Hopkins beat him so there's no point anymore. Jermain Taylor: Lost to pavlik 2x so no point. Jeff Lacy: Done. No rematch. The top names he could fight he has already beaten or he's beaten guys who have beaten them. So, he won't fight them. The only names left are: Arthur Abraham Felix Sturm Lucian Bute Carl Froch Chad Dawson None of these names as of now are worthy of a fight with calzaghe. In my opinion, Calzaghe will take 6-9 months off...See how the light heavyweight and super middleweight divisions play out, and then select an opponent worthy. If Abraham demolishes Pavlik, Abraham-Calzaghe is verrry possible. If Sturm beats Abraham, Sturm-Calzaghe is verrrry possible. If Bute or Froch get a couple more legit wins, a Calzaghe fight with one of them is verrrry possible. If Dawson beats hopkins, jones, kessler, or winner of taylor-lacy, a Dawson-Calzaghe fight WILL HAPPEN. Don't expect Joe to make a fight soon however because as of now nobody is worthy of fighting him and nobody fits the critera to fight him.
:good Even at 37 he would have at least one or two BIG fights-but who to fight-is the problem. He has beaten 8 World Champs same as RJJ what's really left to do?
Enough for what? If he beats Chad Dawson and Dawson/Kessler go on to have spectacular careers, then calzaghes resume/career will be looked at VERRRRRY differently down the road....
Man, that doesnt mean anything. Real great fighters dont live off other fighters victories. If Calzaghe beats Dawson, they'll still have ppl lined up to fight him. Til this day Calzaghe will always be hated for fighting to 40+ year old fighters(might as well call jones 40), he'll never get a break. Think about it, same thing thats happening to Mayweather, he's going thru it rite now. Its already said and done.
Garbage. All the Mayweather hate is directed at his time in the welterweight division, where he didn't stay for long and didn't really fight any elite fighters. If Calzaghe went on to beat Dawson he would have beaten all the key players from 168-175, there would still be a few ignorant smacktards here and there but his stocks would go up greatly. Especially because Dawson could possibly go on to rule the division for a few years once Johnson, Hopkins and Calzaghe retire.
