Should Calzaghe Keep Fighting?

he going to sell out a stadium no matter who he fights in wales, he shoud try to do two things with that advantage, break 50 wins an unify the titles at 175 no matter who has the belts....HBO will give him a couple of gimmie fights, they do it for there boxers,,,,

Calzaghe didnt fight in 5 different divisions like Floyd, Floyd beat everyone his size. Even if Calzaghe went up to HW & outboxed everyone, he'd still be hated by some. You have to understand that its the 0 that they want to go

 

At almost 37 and nothing else to prove why not retire? he has enough cash to last him to his last breath he should get out, with his health and 0, he's for sure done fighting in the USA..

Every fighter has haters, no matter how great, thats inevitable. Although i don't agree with the Floyd hate, the main problem is that people only assess his welterweight stint, which wasn't HOF material on its own. With Calzaghe, if he went on to beat Dawson, he would have beaten pretty much anyone and everyone from 168-175. He would get a **** ton of respect, he beat a shot to **** Roy Jones and ignorant fans were coming out of the closet claiming they had been shown the light, imagine if he beat a prime quality American fighter like Dawson. American fans would be climbing all over his nuts and claiming they had been riding the Calzaghe wagon from the beginning.

You are right that people always find a way to discredit undefeated fighters, its just what they do. But Calzaghe's resume couldn't be anymore contrasting from Mayweather's, especially if he went on to beat Dawson. Mayweather is a guy who jumped through several weight divisions successfully, with brief stints in each. Calzaghe, especially if he beats Dawson, is a guy who has been very thorough over a short weight range. Although they are similar in that they have long reigning undefeated records, their paths couldn't be more different.

 

Yep. But I just believe theres always gonna be ppl that arent gonna give him cred cause they're gonna say his biggest wins came against faded fighters. The main thing Americans remember about Joe is that he beat a 43 yr old.

 

To me, yes he should keep fighting. I'm not saying he should fight until he's 40 or anything, but consider the following:
1. There ARE good fights to be made (Dawson, Johnson, Kessler rematch, even a Hopkins rematch) out there.
2. Joe obviously still has it, meaning he would be the favourite to win ALL fights I mentioned. He's a bit past prime, but a solid 8/10 for me right now, just as Hopkins.
3. Even if he had just one more fight (probably vs Dawson), that would certainly shut up many of his critics, even if he LOST. Yes, he wouldn't be the "great unbeatable machine" his hardcore fans think of him, but he would get mad respect for taking the fight, showing to everyone that he's not afraid to take the risk and fight a prime, young, good champion that some people think could beat him.

Imagine what kind of respect he would get if he won (which would be more probable imo). Of course, some people would never stop criticizing Calzaghe, but not every fan can be satisfied in this sport. Hell, there are people who still criticize Lennox Lewis.

 

Maybe so, in some minds.

But Mayweather is the best boxer alive today.

And Calzaghe is the second best.


(BTW:I'm a fan of Joe's and I care very little for Floyd.)

 

I agree with nearly all of this.

One change I'd make:

If Taylor beats Lacy, I'd say a Calzaghe fight would be legit. Sure Jermain lost twice to Pavlik but he beat Hopkins twice and a victory over Lacy would put him as a possible.

Personally my choices would be:

1. Retire now.

2. Fight Dawson, then Retire.

 

Did a win over Pavlik add anything to Bernard's legacy, and Resume?

Is Calzaghe's resume, and Legacy Greater then Bernards?

Is Dawson viewed as a particularly worse boxer then Pavlik?
