Yes, to me he's just one or two fights away of being a true great. Imo Calzaghe would shut a lot of people up just by TAKING the fight with Dawson, let alone winning it, which is very possible. Whatever some haters/critics say, the guy HAS pretty much cleaned up his division, he obviously has good skills and A+ ring IQ and a very difficult style to cope with. He's still at a very good level, he should make the most of it and cement his legacy by taking one or two big/risky fights more.
If he could tie or break Marciano's record - it would move Calzaghe even further up in the ATG rankings. I still think he has unfinished business with Hopkins - but I doubt the rematch will ever happen.
On the contrary, that's the ONLY thing ATGs live off. If their opponents Weren't any good (i.e. Don't have a good resume), then the victories aren't very important. Floyd's victories over Delahoya, Corrales, Hatton, Castillo,Hernandez .... are good victories BECAUSE of their resumes. If he ONLY had guys like Jesus Chavez, Tony Pep, and Gustave Cuello, their victories wouldn't bring Floyd status and recognition. It's a fairly simple and obvious point.
its pointless to stay .. in my eyes hes too prime for guys like bhop & rjj but the other guys (pavlik & dawson) are still young and un refined.. there will be an excuse no matter who he fights.. its pointless
The truth ! :deal And the same would still be true, even were he to outpoint Wlad. You still get fools attempting to denigrate Roy's victory over Ruiz.
the sad thing is i would love to see calzaghe lose.. but hes doing the challengers a bigger favor than hes doing for himself if dawson/pavlik/bhop/kessler... not only are they stealing calzaghe's 0... their going to possibly de-fraud one of the biggest flukes in boxing history ( depending on the level of the loss ) ... but if calzaghe win's he's not beating any prime fighters or winning a signifigant career changing fights... hes either beating a fighter that was too old or never really tested so people will always say he fought hyped up rookie fighters or old over the hill fighters... its really not worth it unless he gets a big ass pay day and is confident he can pull off the "w" people say that **** now but if calzaghe happens to destroy dawson... dawson is what we all thought he was "over hyped young guy with raw talent that hasnt been perfected yet" blah blah blah .... i mean yeah i would love to see the fight but i can already see the excuse making theres nobody who was actually neck and neck with calzaghe in career growth like cotto to floyd (margarito ruined this one) holyfeild/lennox to tyson duran/hearns/hagler to leonard joe frazier/ george foreman to ali you dont think so?
Not really, Calzaghe would be the favorite. People regard Dawson fairly modestly. This would be a showcase fight for Calzaghe. If he blows Dawson out that's the idea really, no upset..
I honesty can't see why a boxing fan wouldn't want Joe to box again. It's not like he's shot or diminished particularly - he's still highly competitive, and one of the best in the world. Why would they want to deny themselves a competitive night of boxing - a real live match up.
Joe still seems to be fighting pretty near his peak level, I think he has enough left to take out Dawson if he wants to do it then maybe he should call it a day. Like he said himself, you shouldn't just keep fighting the latest young gun until you finally get beat. Dawson's really not that much imho, he got his ass kicked by Glen Johnson. I also think Pavlik would be a quality and very winnable fight for Joe C., in fact I would pick him in either matchup.
If Calzaghe beats Dawson and another younger fighter (Sturm or Abraham most likely)...Calzaghe has a chance to be top 10 ATG IMO. The chance, however, would be predicated on the careers of Mikkel Kessler, Chad Dawson, and Sturm or Abraham. Calzaghe's legacy is far from entrenched b/c his biggest win so far IMO is over kessler and kessler's legacy is faaar from complete...How people rate kessler and dawson (if he fights dawson and beats dawson) in 10 years will determine how calzaghe is rated.
