Prizefighter:think The winner typically adds 3 top 100 names to his resume in a 9 rd fight.:huh I like the idea of stacking a tournament card with formidable names, but realistically the guy who can box and take a punch is going to win 9/10 times if he has any sort of stamina. It's a good idea for a guy like Chauncey since he fits the mold perfectly. But how does winning 3-3rd decisions over fellow fringe fighters get him a bigger fight?:think And with KJ.....another good boxer with good conditoning and a strong chin....it's really a toss up.:think
If it's going to be off-TV fights for Chauncy, then he should bring in about 2 or 3 well known names to beat, just for publicity reasons. He could start with Owen Beck. At this point, Chauncy shouldn't take chances against tough gatekeepers or top of the line clubfighters, because those guys are too good to be tune-ups. Chauncy should go for easy tune-ups or big money fights (on TV, if he can get an offer, or in Europe) exclusively. The problem is how to find "name" guys who are really no better than tune-ups. Go for aging dudes...the ones on big losing streaks, I say. Beat about 3 of those dudes off-TV, get the right publicity, and I think HBO and Showtime may ready for Chauncy then. Chauncy has the record and the rating. He just needs a higher profile now in the ring. That will set him up for the big money fight that every contender is angling for.
The thing is he has never been on tv, hes never fought a top 100 guy, why would HBO take a chance with him? He needs to and I believe he could, get on ESPN FNF, that way he could get some exposure. His opponents might get a little better if he does that.
He was on RTL for the Solis fight, the ONLY top 100 guy he's faced and showed up a whale and got shut out and nearly KTFO'd. HBO wants none of that.
Ur right, but that fight did him no good, he lost I can think of one ex-champ who would fight him, and Chauncy could very well win, it depends on how absolutely shot the guy is: James Toney I think he would also take whatever meager money Welliver would offer him too
How about Chauncy fights the winner of the MMA rubber match between Bowe & Golota? Surely someone would sanction it? :hey
Chauncy had 3 televised fights: The John Sargent Fight, the David Bostice Fight, and the Odlanier Solis fight. Sargent & Bostice fights were on local channels (like CSS in the southeast) and the Solis fight was on RTL.
as much as chauncy may want his big fight he doesnt bring much to the table its hard to secure high profile guys when your a huge risk and a low reward
Problem is, the kinds of guys that ESPN FNF would make him fight are high risk and low reward. Chauncy has a world rating now (with two alphas), and any opponent ESPN puts in front of him will likely be tough and unrated. That means Chauncy has everything to lose and little to gain, the opponent has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Bad trade off. Because of his high rating, Chauncy is positioned to go for big money in a big fight. Nobody in that position would jeopardize their ranking by risking the kinds of fights I describe above. It's unheard of. I think Chauncy should keep doing what he's doing, and aggressively network for a big fight with someone, as long as the money is right. Maybe he'll get a chance against someone like Tyson Fury in the UK. If he wins, he advances in boxing. If he loses, he starts over. But at least the reward would be worth the risk.
The local stuff doesn't really impress big HBO executives, especially if it dates from years ago. I expect that Welliver will get a big fight on TV against someone eventually, either way. But whatever he does, the compensation and potential rewards need to be commensurate (from a business and career perspective) with whatever risks he takes. That's what makes his position difficult at present. Just my two cents.
Chauncy has top ten ratings with the WBC and WBO, in addition to regional title belts. That's enough to make him a desirable opponent for a big name. If HBO's not interested, something else should come along eventually.
The Solis fight did Chauncy a lot of good, as he was unknown and unrated at the time, and he exceeded expectations by putting on a decent fight. For unrated fighters, or for developing fighters (which Chauncy was at the time), sometimes a strong losing effort is as good as a win. It's all relative. Toney is interesting. I hadn't thought about him. He's been looking shot lately, and Chauncy could very well win that fight. That would give Chauncy some positive PR, and raise his profile. The big TV execs might take a second look at him after that.
The way it works is that Seth Mitchell and his team are approached first. If they say yes, then it gets forwarded to HBO. It's never done in reverse.
I agree, but I disagree...HBO & Showtime want views, and they look for big, glamorous, glitzy records, and they don't measure heart. They would rather show Seth Mitchell types, or a faded former champ then a legit fighter that has paid his dues. If HBO or Showtime would hold a Poll or Contest of which boxer the fans want shown, Chauncy could get enough votes to possibly land an undercard fight...!!! Its like boxing legend Bert Sugar said "Boxers can't get tv recognition, without tv recognizing the boxer". "Catch 22, at its finest, so alot of boxers don't get the recognition because of tv, and the tv channel don't get the recognition becasue of the boxer".
