After rewatching the Legendary Nights episodes, do you feel Richard steele was right in stopping the fight with only a few seconds left in the round? IMO I think Steele made the right call because you can never be sure in this sport that 1 more shot to the head when you are already hurt could be your last, especially from a hard hitting fighter by Chavez. The fact is Taylor didn't respond when Steele asked him if he was alright. If he would have let the fight continue and say Chavez landed another huge right hand that could have SERIOUSLY permanently hurt Taylor, boxing once again would be given another bad look. your thoughts?
Probably, but after seeing what happened to Taylor's career and life, I wish he would have gotten those seconds after the KD. That win over Chavez might have made a difference in his life. At the same time, maybe he would have gotten seriously hurt by Chavez after getting up. I don't know.. it's just a very sad situation.
That's funny because i just watched this show too. The initial reaction is that Steele made a mistake. But if you look at the fact that Taylor looked away when Steele asked him if he was OK along with the fact that Steele wasn't aware that there was less than 10 seconds left, he did the right thing. He was looking out for Taylor's best interests. If anything, Taylor's trainer (forgot his name), should be at fault. He told Taylor he had to win the last round AND he distracted Taylor when Steele was talking to him. :nut Just take away one of those factors and Taylor wins.
Yes, it shouldn't be up to the ref when he sees a fighter hurt to look at the time and try and think whether or not its a good idea. A fighter is hurt, he can't respond, its over. There is a tunnel vision I'm sure going on where the ref is not noticing time or end of fight but only the fighter he has to protect.
I think it was technically right to stop it. I can't say if it was "morally" right or not though. I probably would have let it go on just because stopping it is a shitty way to end a fight like that considering how great it was.
From the body thumping bestowed upon him by JC Chavez. The HBO broadcast team did'nt pay any mind to the investment of body shots coming from Chavez. Go over to fightnews and read about Cho He, a fighter who just passed away from brain trauma sustained in a boxing match May 3rd. Like the Chavez-Taylor fight, the ref in that Cho He fight stopped the fight in the last round with about the same seconds remaining when Steele waived the Chavez-Taylor fight off. .....and like Chavez-Taylor, the ref took criticism for stopping the fight when there was only 7 seconds left. May Cho He rest in peace, but how would that ref feel today if he were to have let the fight last the distance because there was only 7 seconds remaining????? There was only 7 damn seconds remaining, let the fighter finish the fight............. The ref stopped the fight, the fighter died from head trauma. Its a good thing for that ref that he stopped the fight, and does'nt have to live with the mind that he could have prevented a death by stopping a fight when the fight was ready to be stopped.....because the ref in this case stopped it. May Richard Steele read about what happened to Cho He, and feel good about himself for stopping the Chavez-Taylor fight, when a stoppage was called for.
JC Chavez should have been arrested for what he did to Taylor that night. he beat everything out of him. Meldrick was truly never the same man after that fight. Going into that fight he was the best in the world. he came out average. Imagine 15 rds. we would prob be saying (R.I.P.)
In the context, sure he should have. And while one might feel sorry for Taylor the greatness of Chavez is personified by this victory. This is one of the most brilliant comebacks in boxing history, but it is usually overshadowed by guilt over Taylor's heart wrenching defeat. - Jason
everyone lways looks at this fight from the taylor p.o.v. lets say that he did not stop the fight and allowed taylor those last few seconds, and taylor gets the decision. would that have been fair to to chavez who did what he was supposed to do. which is stop your oponent inside of the alloted 12 rounds. being ahead after 11 rounds 2 minutes and 50 seconds is not enough. you must be able to finish, and sadly taylor did not respond.
