I say yes. By taking out clinching, boxing fights would become more prone to knockouts and faster paced fights. We would get more Knockout highlights on SportsCenter and boxing would become more entertaining and offensive for the casuals. Casuals are the ones needed to bring boxing back to primetime spotlight and possibly overtake UFC in popularity once again. I say this because I care about the sport and I want it popular again like old times. Boxing organizations should do something to make boxing more entertaining again and bring back the casuals; and I say taking out clinching would be good for the sport. Like look at Klitchsko fights or Mayweather fights, lots of clinching and noone likes seeing that. Look at the latest fight on CBS, the Thurman-Porter fight, there wasn't much clinching in that fight and that fight apparently got a lot of viewerships, the most this year. If boxing suffers from the problem with fighters not wanting to take risks and the best don't fight the best, I say boxing should change up the rules a bit to adjust to this current problem. Fighters would be forced to fight back or do something other than clinching, which is boring to see. It would be good for the sport. I say make it a rule that fighters get deducted big time on points for clinching. This way, we get more an offensive and less boring boxing. I am a fan of slugfests and all around action. I enjoyed the Salido-Vargas fight and Thurman-Porter way more so than Porter-Brook or other clinchfests. What say you?
well "severely" might be to strong of a word, but I get what you are saying, how about consistently? you clinch when the other guy is trying to box you get warned, you do it again you get a point deducted.
yes, also sometimes two guys are exhausted and its fairly equal as they both tie each other up while gulping a few extra breaths, its the one sided clinching designed to stop the other guy from throwing inside that needs to be addressed.
Boxing nerds will tell you no, because it's supposedly part of the sweet science, but as I don't watch boxing with an object up my a, I say yes, it should definitely be penalized.
It should be tighented up considerably. Clinches are going to happen, but we should end the Johnny Ruiz type man love. Wladdy had a couple of fights where he definately shuould have lost some points.
Yes, Kellerman had said in an interview he might think it's a good idea to take a point off for every clinch. I agree.
The ref should get a riding crop and be allowed to crack the offenders back,,,, the worse the clinch, the worse the wack. Plus a point off every 3 wacks and more than one wack allowed per clinch. and the Refs should wear black leather.
Now that's a thought. :hey Breaking up "Clinches" a big part of the Referee's job. The Ref is allowed to deduct points for excessive "Clinching"... so maybe the State Boxing Commissions should crack down on Ref's who ignore "Clinches".
