You continue to impress me. Most can read between the lines. You are very generous with your time. Do you have enough material for more sparring and AMS fights from the past? I found those articles so intresting.
Hey, my man, thank you for that...and, YES, I have a ton of materials. much of which I will include in my book...what stuff in particular do u like the best? 80's amateurs stuff???
If you have the time John, how did your tournament pan out(obviously well!) when you won the MOB at the Eastern Olympic trials.I first checked out your site after the Archie Moore column in BN and that caught my eye along with your camp alongside Ray Leonard the same year. That led me to those wonderful sparring videos.I always wondered how Ray thought he would do against Roy (allowing for the weight difference obviously) and what your own thoughts on the matter were. It must **** you off seeing some of the **** written about Roy here. For me,Roy's downfall and questionable(not for me:nono) legacy came because he was a natural LHW.It's been a division that history has been very unkind to IMO.I've had it in mind to do a thread on how strongly I feel on the way some great fighters of the 80's like Hill,Czyz,Williams and Andries don't get the respect they would've had they been middles or welters. Virgil Hill and Ricardo Lopez are probably the most criminally underrated fighters in recent times for me. I'm guessing it might be a subject close to your heart?
Damn I wish I would have saw that you responded earlier. All of it.. but the 80's AMS stuff is my time frame. Your training with Roy Jones in the AMS to your Sparring with Pascal. You have great stories...I'm sure you've been told. Were you there when Gerald McClellan beat Roy in the AMS? I remember reading a short write up about that fight and you are the only writer I can think of who would have wrote it?
Scully, if you don't mind here's a Sports-Psychology question for you.: Do trainers encourage their fighters to avoid message boards like this one? I mean, on one hand, with this being probably the most active message board related to boxing, I can see the temptation for some of the fighters to want to read what's being said about them. However, as you're well aware, probably 10% is positive, whereas the rest is usually brutal trolling and downright nasty stuff. Do you advocate to your fighters to avoid sites like this, or is it something you leave up their discretion?
haha, honestly, most fighters I know who are aware of them avoid them at all costs LOL...they have zero patience for the hateful comments that come up when people realize who they are. Ive tried to get some pretty recognizable names to pst on different boards and they have NO interest LOL...
Well, my book is going to be for you then LOL...I have a bunch of cool stuff from that era...I was there when Gerald beat RJ in 1988, I recap that fight with my own opinions plus I include the newspaper story from the local paper the following morning...
The 1988 Eastern U.S. Olympic trials was the crowning moment of my amateur career, DEFINITELY!! Thats cool that u even know about it...Roy's legacy is in no way questioned by me whatsoever, I agree with you on that...I tell A LOT OF COOL INSIDE STUFF ON RJ in my book!!!!!
I have a few questions for you Scully. Why is Dawson ducking/down bending from the waist to avoid a punch? He was almost knocked down twice from Hopkins for doing that ****. As a matter fact what ended the first fight against Hopkins was Dawson ducking/down bending from the waist, and of course Hopkins is partly to blame for lunging on Dawson's back. Are you teaching Dawson to do that ****? In an interview Dawson said that you have been teaching him to use more shoulder movement, it hasn't helped Dawson at all. Dawson's footwork still needs improvement. Against Hopkins, Dawson's lead foot (his right foot) is pointed inwards which makes it difficult for Dawson to get off with the left cross. Chad fighting in that useless shoulder-roll stance make thing worse. How would you rate Dawson's performance against Hopkins in the second fight? I would rate it a 5/10 he looked like ****, do you agree? Oh and I read your interview on doghouseboxing, you think Dawson looked good in the first two rounds against Ward? You have to be ****ing kidding me, he showed no foot movement, he wasn't using his height and reach, and he was vulnerable to Ward's left hook. Dawson was getting hit repeatedly by Ward's left hand, and you told him in the corner to watch out for Ward's right?
Well said. X2. Thanks John, for coming on here and putting up w/us and giving us what you can in terms of inside info and analysis.
John hasn't given us any info, but I don't need to hear it, the results speak for itself. As fans of the sport we have the right to criticize boxers and trainers if there is something wrong, no different than the issue with Chavez Jr and Roach. At least Roach admits there is a problem, Scully doesn't want to admit there is a problem. Under Scully Dawson has looked like ****. I re-watched the Hopkins vs Dawson II I thought the fight was a draw. Hopkins had the most obvious strategy, which was circling to Dawson's left to avoid Dawson's right hand. I don't know why Dawson wasn't throwing the left cross enough, and everytime he did his foot would be out of position. It wasn't even a straight left, it was a crooked straight left. There was a lot of flaws that Dawson showed against Hopkins that he needed to fix, and Scully hasn't even attempted to admit that Dawson has shown mistakes. If Ward fought Dawson at 175 the results probably would have been the same, just by the way Dawson has looked against Hopkins.
