Marciano fouled the hell out of Cockell, and the referee let it happen.

But had the referee warned Marciano and threatened to DQ him perhaps Marciano would have cleaned up his act. I mean, he didn't need to foul to beat Don Cockell.

In his book "Ringside Seats" ,Peter Wilson said he taxed Rocky about the fouls, and he denied them only after seeing the film of the fight did he accept the low blows and butting. Cockell never complained he said ,after the fight " we were both in there with two arms and two legs good luck to him."

Cockell simply wasnt good enough & got beatdown, whether Rocky fouled or not is irrelevant, if the fouls were that bad then Don should have commited a few of his own & if the ref warned Don while allowing Marciano to continue with his fouling then he would have a stronger case instead what seems very like sour grapes in the newspaper above on post 1.

Some accounts say Maricano and his corner was pissed because Cockell was supposively going after his surgically reparied nose and trying to injure him. At any rate, Cockell was a game but impotent punching bag.

I didnt think the fouls were as bad as people say, I not saying there was not fouls.

I saw a few head butts, the hit when down, but that was about it, The fouls did not earn a DQ imo.

    The Brits went overboard imo.

I think the controversy really began because the referee never once warned Marciano for the fouls.

Marciano was rough but I doubt he was intentionally fouling Cockell.

The significance of the fouls is blown out of proportion in that article, fighters have definitely got away with much worse without being DQ'd.

I think the article is fairly accurate. But that same degree of fouling was commonplace. Wilson probably had a point about that degree of fouling not being allowed in British rings at that time.

In those days British referees were strict, and would have no qualms about DQing even the home or house fighter for fouling. Nowadays that is not the case, nor is the myth that British judges sont score fights the same way (ie. that Americans reward more for "aggression" more than Brits, no longer true).

Cockell actually got away with headbutts in the fight too.

Who said anything about punching? There are moments early in the fight where it looks like Cockell is trying to rough up the nose in the clinch. I doubt it provoked Maricano's fouls though as it was just an ugly fight, however Bert Sugar and some other old timers have made this claim.

:58-1:00 Cockell taking his open glove to Maricano's nostril on the inside.

I love the allusion that the fight was held out in some lawless place, where the majesty of British sense of fair play couldn't take hold, and therefore rendered the challenger helpless. At lest that's what I read into the suggestion in the caption to the stop-time photos of Marciano hitting him while Cockell was on one knee.

    Good stuff.

Much ado about nothing. Cockell was a heavy bag the whole night; this article suggests otherwise, which is silly.

I must give Cockell a world of credit for the man-sized beating he took that night. Those kinds of things are career-enders and potentially life threatening because they are so sustained. He hung tough, you gotta give him that.
