Should elbows to the head of a grounded opponent be banned?

They should be banned. You can crush a skull with a good elbow and it won't be long before it happens. Its something that the fighters are getting more and more proficient at.

Me, I'm a fan of soccer kicks as well as elbows.

I think the 12-6 rule is stupid as hell. You are right Big Red, a skull can be crushed by a good elbow, regardless of what angle it's thrown from, but it has to land pretty much perfectly, and to the side of the head. A person would have to be on their back or on their chest with their head on the ground sideways for it to happen.

I don't think so, you can angle your torso to have all sorts of angles of attack with a elbow that comes from across your body. And as you likely know the torso can cork screw to generate a huge amount of force. Especially when it is comming down with maybe 3/4 of the fighters weight.

You get someone with a Mike Tyson type exsplosivnes and with his killer instinct. That has learned to be a master at elbows I would not be supriesed to see a dead on shot to the forehead totally smash the skull in. There is not much difference bettween an elbow and a steel hammer.

Alistair Overeem is a former K1 Hw GP champion who has some of the most vicious knees in mma history. One of his knees could do more damage than any elbow ever could. Do we ban knees because he could seriously injure someone? No, knees are apart of Martial arts just like elbows, punches, and kicks. Removing any component of martial arts from the sport would cripple the fighters that use them. Could you imagine a prime Tito Ortiz not being able to use elbows when he was in a fighters guard?

Knees are very dangerous also. Espesially when they have the back of the head. They should also be banned imo. If knees and elbows are allowed I think headbutting should be allowed. I don't know why they banned headbutting it was a great weapon in ground and pound for sometime.

They've been pretty "proficient" in Thailand for a very very very long time and are the most proficiant fighters in the world with the elbow by miles. They have more fights week in week out, month in month out, year in year out with elbows than any other country in the world.

    Not many crushed skulls! :deal

Those are not when the head is braced 100% on the ground though. I would like to debate it more, but I have to go to bed.

Out of the thousands of mma fights that have taken place in the states I have never heard of someone getting their skull caved in by an elbow. Are there any stories that come to mind that make you think such a thing is even possible?

Ground and pound is a developing system of combat as far as I know. So the elbows on the ground should continue to get more and more deadly for some time imo.

With that said I change my mind and elbows should be allowed and knees. Also maybe soccer kicks and headbutting should be brought back in. If we take these things away we lose the most pure fighting system.

Ground and pound is a great part of fighting, and a big factor and will get to be a even bigger factor as time goes on. I look forward to seeing it develop futher and the sport as a whole.

I hope your right that skulls can not be caved in with elbows, but I think they can.

I like elbows and knees but headbutts aren't really my cup of tea. Back in the NHB days they were accepted but I don't think they belong in the current form of mma.
