Record 61-10-1 Apostoli beat; Risko Brouillard Krieger Thil Lee Corbett 111 Seelig Bettina Abrams Steele Should he be included in the top twenty middles of all time? If not, where do you place him?
Like you bring out ,he beat the best guys around at his time. He seemed like he had everything going for him in his prime.Looked like you couldn't find a real flaw in him. Little lower than Tiger on the rankings.
I love threads like this, McVey, which show up my pig-ignorance. He wasn't on my list. And I'm a bit geeky about my lists, regarding resume. If anything, I lean too much towards the old school. Interested in how this discussion develops.
IMO, yes. In fact, I think a case could be made that he rates higher than more well-known/celebrated MWs like LaMotta, Cerdan, & Zale. At the very least, I think he has a deeper resume than any of those 3, even if LaMotta does hold a win over the GOAT.
I have Apostoli at #12 all time at MW based purely on fights contested in that division (making a slight allowance above 160lbs for non-title fights). In fights contested at MW he was 57-7-1. I consider that only 4 of those losses were during or around his prime years, an MD loss to the excellent Ken Overlin and Fred was only 22, YCIII avenged, Ceferino Garcia and Tony Zale. In addition to YCIII, Apostoli beat ATG Freddie Steele, Georgie Abrams, Marcel Thil, Lou Broulliard, Paul Pirrone, Babe Risko, Solly Krieger x 2, Swede Berglund, Glen Lee x 3 & Frankie Britt. That's an outstanding win resume for one of the most underrated, imo, MWs in history.
