I want to know who is voting yes, to explain your criteria fro the HOF. Because great fights alone do not entitle you in the hall. I seen a ****ing great fight down at the local gym a couple of years ago, does that mean the two lads warrant a place in canastota? Jeez....
I would just like to say , while were on the subject of Gatti that , it was absolute madness when he was given a chance by people of beating Mayweather , because he SPLIT A TRILOGY WITH MICKY WARD , i couldnt believe what i was reading/hearing , all because he turned boxer against Ward and then stopped a pastprime Leija , ridiculus
Hell yes Gatti should be in the HOF! He won titles at both 130 and 140. He was involved in 4 Ring magazine fights of the year. He defeated former champions. He was involved in more memorable wars then almost any fighter of the current generation.
If he had underrated skills, why didn't he beat any elite fighters with them? Every time he stepped up to the highest level, and quite a few times when he stepped up to some levels below that, he got creamed. And the excitement argument doesn't cut it either. There were equally exciting fighters in his time who were more talented and accomplished, like a Vargas or Corrales, and i'm not even sure THEY will get in.
You got that right, not many people had the skills to be hit with over 50% of another guy's power punches in a fight more than once.
Isnt it the Hall of FAME??? come on.... can anyone give me the criteria that the HOF uses to judge? otherwise.... its not ALWAYS about being one of the best fighters.. He was one of the most popular fighters of his era... fought some great fighters, fought some good fighters.... he was a good fighter at 140lbs... he has some of the most fights of the year honors in the history of the sport... its not always about wins and losses... this isnt, the hall of the best
No I believe the HOF should be reserved for truly great fighters. Gatti participated in truly great fights, but wasn't one of the greats (accomplishment wise or resume wise).
Of course. The man is a 2 division World Champion. Add that to the fact that he was extremely popular, and was in a "fight of the year" on a couple of occasions. The HOF isn't only about accomplishments, it is for fighters to be remembered. Gatti not only had the accomplishments by being a two division world Champ, but he also is a fighter to be remembered with his great fights, and popularity.
mcguigan also dethroned an all-time great in pedroza for the title. his induction is questionable but he's more deserving than gatti.
Look, he wasn't a GREAT fighter, when you look at his basic accomplishments: Two titles in Two weight classes. Not too shabby, but not HOF material however. But, I believe that being in 3 fights of the year is a HUGE accomplishment, and IMO that puts him over the edge. Factor in his popularity, and he will be in the HOF.
99.9% of the men who will ever box will achieve as much as Gatti! Winning titles in mulitple weight classes, participating in more fights of the year than any man except Carmen Bassilio, and facing some of the best fighters of his era certainly qualifies as an exceptional career worthy of being memorialized.
