Should George Chuvalo be inducted into the hall of fame?

I happen to think that this is a very good question myself. Most of the posters in the GF, didn't seem to think that he should.

I'm not so sure myself, but he does have some notable acheivments.

    1. He was the longest ranking top 10 heavyweight contender in history.

    2. He was never floored in some 93 fights

    4. He had good wins over a lot of decent fighters like Quarry, Williams, Dejohn, King, Jones, Cleroux, and several others.

    5. Many feel he was robbed against WBA champ Earnie Terrell, and his fight with Floyd Patterson was extremely close.

    6. He held the Canadian heavyweight title on a few separate occasions.

I will just make a comment on the general forum, the standard of poster there is generally very very poor.

Well,im no expert on chuvalo but judging just from those stats you have given, then yes. I mean the longest top ten in a very competitive period is excellent. Im sure there are lesser contendors in the hall....
He also fought a whos who of heavyweights...

Quality of induction is already very low, to get it even lower with a second-rater like Chuvalo would make the whole thing a joke that holds zero credibility.

Who's gonna be next, Chuck Wepner for knocking Ali down, and beating old Terrell?

I think Chuvalo's credentials are a bit better than Wepner's. Being the longest ranked heavyweight contender in history, and never having been floored in nearly 100 pro fights is not a bad legacy, especially given the fighters that he shared his era with.

There are many tens if not hundreds of fighters with credentials as good as Chuvalo's (not necessarily including being a ranked contender for long time) as for never having been floored, it means nothing whatsoever. You want to include Ross Purity too? Oliver McCall has much better credentials than Chuvalo ever had.

Where did the claim of him being the longest ranked heavyweight come anyway? He was only ranked 6 years or so.

Personally, I think this is a rather huge feat. Being the longest ranked heavyweight contender in history, especially during the time frame that he was, is a significant accomplishment. I agree that there are other contenders with better acheivments, but to say that there are dozens or hundreds, is getting carried away.

Neither of those men fought in anywhere near the number of bouts that Chuvalo had, and nor did they fight as many all time greats, or competed in 15 round fights. Therefore, I'd say the comparison is irrelovant.

All very good points. Chuvalo is a very underrated contender in my opinion.

Quarry mistimed the count, he had already won ever round up to that point. Cleveland williams was 100% shot when he fought Chuvalo. Chuvalo was underated, but he is no hall of famer.
