Leonard fought in the pocket brilliantly after struggling on the outside against the taller fighter like Groves did with the long Smith, should he have got in the pocket, or was that too dangerous because of his chin? This content is protected
Ray had a superb chin, and Hearns showed that Leonard could hurt him. Groves just isn't good enough to fight like that
Pretty much this and that’s not a criticism as rarely do boxers have a complete game like Leonard, usually they favour one or the other and in Groves case his game was built around his jab and keeping at his own range. I’ll say again though that until this fight Smith was never talked about in terms of power even though eps huge at the weight he’s more known for grinding out twelve round wins. Maybe I’m just too cynical but after seeing a vid about that win where every shot had Groves wincing and then seeing Smith with his gloves still on twenty mins after the fight whenever Groves had his gloves and wraps off has made me wonder?
What Ray did was rare and he was great and Hearns was great. The taller fighter has to make a mistake and let the smaller guy inside.. If the taller fighter sticks to his jab and counterpunches when the smaller guy tries to get inside, then he had the advantage.
