Should Haye fight another bum or take a risk before Klit?

Golden Boy have offered Haye the chance to appear on HBO on January 24 in the chief support to Shane Mosley's next bout.

I reckon it's smart to make an appearance on HBO before a potential klitschko fight for some much needed US exposure. So far, HBO hasn't mentioned Haye at all in any of their broadcasts. Haye-Klitschko must have the backing of HBO to actually materialize.

So if this is indeed Haye's next move, should he fight another rubbish geezer like Barrett or a legit bloke like Peter ?

I fancy a fight against Arreola, Peter, the Thompson/Toney winner, or Eddie Chambers. Then we can hope for a summer tilt with Klitschko to materialize. What do u Brits think? :patriot

Maybe it is too soon for Haye to take the opportunity with it being late January, although if it does happen i would like to see him fight a durable fighter like Arreola who has a decent following in America and if Haye were to beat him he may be appreciated more by the americans.

I don't think an 8/10 rounder on the card of Margo vs Mosley will do him any harm - stay busy and also get some coverage.

Haye is going to attempt a smash and grab on the HW scene (he will not make a lenghy series of defences), if he takes on a list of quality opponents before Wlad, Vit, with his style, sooner or later he will come a cropper - and thats the end of the Wlad, Vit dream. Just one more fight at HW against a lower level opponent may suit him though.

On the issue about exposure, if he beats Wlad, or VIt his US exposure will perhaps naturaly go through the roof.

well no one is expecting him to take on a bunch of top hws...but it looks like he's probably gonna to have 1 more fight before a potential klitschko clash. so should that opponent be a pasty like Barrett or a dangerous opponent like Peter? or should he just wait it out and fight a klitschko when available?

Yea a top guy will improve his TV profile - it's a risky game though. I'd like to see him take a top contender, it improves his resume as well.

yep i agree. if he can beat a peter, arreola, thompson/toney winner or chambers on HBO he will legitimize himself as a real contender. it makes a klitschko fight a lot more marketable.

but it's certainly a huge financial risk. if he loses to 1 of these guys, that payday is gone. a guy like peter or arreola could be real dangerous once Haye gets wild. they can both take shots especially peter. Thompson/Chambers are more technical boxers who I can see giving Haye some problems.

But I think Booth is gonna go with a Kevin Johnson/Minto level opponent. A small step above Barrett. not a big puncher.

i just hope he gets through to the klits so he can rid us of the Frankenstein sisters and their boring slapfests :yep

I think he would beat Eddie Chambers into next week.

The guy is an overrated bum - not a bad start Stateside in truth.

Arreola will not go near Haye.

I really want to see him fight Povetkin.

I think that would be a terrific fight. Shame he is Wlad's mandatory, so it won't happen.

it's possible but i believe he's pretty durable. povetkin isn't a big puncher but he's active and worked eddie over in the second half after Chambers was tagging Povetkin with right hands for the first 5 rounds. after that, eddie stopped punching. i think povetkin's workrate overwhelmed him more than anything. haye doens't have a large output and chambers can fight at a more leisure pace like against brock. he throws an excellent 1-2 combination and hooks to the body well. very quick handed and straight punches. high guard. i could see those right hands bothering haye especially if the fight dragged on. he's not heavy handed but is a sharp puncher. he really busted up povetkin's face and likely blinded Calvin Brock in one eye. Chambers is a good boxer but his feet are stuck in cement and he looks like he is 6 months pregnant.

Thompson is very durable, an awkard southpaw, big (6'5'' and near 250 pounds) and busy. he took a boatload of wlad right hands and Dr. Octopus took a lot of his steam away in the clinch. Haye fights fair so he wont hold and lean on thompson.

I think both would be pretty big risks especially thompson. i think thompson is gonna outpoint toney by 5 or 6 pts.

I think Povetkin is average in all departments - Haye would most likely outbox him and stop him late.

Beating up on an old and shot Chris Byrd doesn't convince me that he is the business.

I think Haye should take the oppurtunity.

    A number of good reasons.

Its staying busy............a desired fight against one of the Klitshko brothers will not happen until at least mid way through 2009

    Haye needs to stay sharp.

Exposure and experience of fighting in Amercia.

And Haye needs the experience..................I agree with Trotters observation that Haye is still a somewhat GREEN fighter.

What is he...............a 22 fight pro............or something like that.

Compared to the Klithsko's etc...............Haye is a inexperienced fighter.

His talent and power have got him this far............but he needs more experience before fighting one of the brothers.

Its another payday for Haye in the bank as well.

And its a great oppurnity overall.

I think Haye should take the fight on January 24th.

To be honest.........the opponet dont matter to much...........someone decent.

But this is just about gaining a new experience fighting in America , getting more exposure and staying sharp.

Haye needs all the improvement he can get before he steps in the ring with Wlad or Vitali

yeah that would really be a fantastic fight. the winner would clearly be deserving of a title shot. but i doubt either risks their positioning right now.

if haye can't get rid of povetkin early, it could turn into a vicious slugfest. those fights against Fragomeni and Mormeck who employ similar styles worry me. they gave him fits. Povetkin while not heavy handed hits harder than both and throws very sharp inside combinations. his workrate tends to go up as the fight progresses. he looks like he can take a decent shot too. However, he is a slow starter and haye could really capitalize there.

from the stuff ive been hearing and reading, my guess is wlad tries to fight the valuev-holyfield winner in the spring, then povetkin in the summer.

vitali will fight JCG early in 09, then Haye in the summer.
