I'm going to a boxing gym to train for the first time on Thursday. I've been playing around on punch bags and doing some pad work with my dad (who used to box) and done a bit of shadow boxing and I feel more comfortable as a southpaw. I'm right handed, but standing orthodox just feels weird and I can't throw left hooks in the stance, I look disabled when I try. So should I go to the gym and say I'm a southpaw, or go along with what the trainer says (I'm guessing he'd prefer to teach orthodox) as after all I have had no technique training or anything, just feel better as a southpaw. What dya reckon?
go with what you feel comfortable, i'm left handed but fight orthadox....but also listen to your trainer if he says i know it feels weird now but you'll be better orthadox then listen to him
I'm left handed, and when I first went to the gym, I fought orthodox. My coach said what hand are you so I said left. He told me to fight southpaw for a bit and watched me. He said I looked much more comfortable, well-balanced, powerful. My right hook was terrrrrible! But I kept practicing and practicing. If I were you I'd right Orthodox, seeing as your right handed. Remember, straight shots win fights.
Go with whats more comfortable. I am also a right-handed southpaw and so are many others. But as others have said you should listen to your trainer.
Well as if anyone cares atsch but I went to the gym and the trainer told me to fight orthodox. My left hooks are baaaaaaad, but even worse is my fitness. It's disgusting how out of shape I am. We did do some light sparring, the punches being thrown wouldn't have knocked a fly out it was more about technique I suppose, but I was getting beaten to the punch badly and what wth my left being ridiculous everytime I saw an opening to throw it it was too slow so I switched to southpaw and got shouted at :thumbsup I was a so much better fighting southpaw though. I'll just learn to fight orthodox and then be one of those annoying ****s that switches styles for no reason :bbb
