Should Jeffries crouch or go upright against these greats?

Well first things first i'd drink a protein shake. Then I'd shoot up, do some peck deck and practice on my fundamentals. I'd take a big **** before the weigh-in and keep it in an air tight container. Then i'd swallow it back down after and come in with a weight advantage. With my high workrate, fundamentals, black state of mind and nutrional strength i'd probably wear them both down before the 8th.

In the second Ruhlin fight Jeffries is in a slight couch , leaning to his right, his chin tucked into his shoulder, left hand low and extended. He appears very open to right hands over his left, I wonder how he would have weathered precision punchers like Joe Louis?

The argument has always gone that Louis had issues with crouching fighters (half true) and nobody is going to question Jeffries chin. Thgese factors point to Jeffries making a longer fight of it.

Acounts of the second Ruhlin fight describe Jeffries switching to a more upright and agresive aroach, though he obviously uses the crouch to some extent in the highlights we have.

Jeffries is certainly more aggressive than against Sharkey, and he has Ruhlin on the back foot in all the footage.Jeffries would not be easy for even the greatest punchers to stop ,but accurate, precise bombers such as Louis would make raw steak out of his featrues imo, crouch or no.

    Hi, Janitor

Let me set up our responses for comparison, and I'll try to ask some further questions in a couple days.

(btw, what are your posture picks for Jeffries vs. Tunney and Charles?).

    .................Guilalah ..... Janitor
John L Sullivan -- crouch -------Upright
    Peter Jackson -- upright ---------Crouch
    Jack Johnson -- upright ---------Crouch
    Sam Langford -- crouch ----------Upright
    Jack Dempsey -- crouch--------- Upright
    Gene Tunney -- upright
    Joe Louis -- crouch -------------Crouch
    Ezzard Charles -- upright
    Rocky Marciano -- crouch --------Upright
    Sonny Liston --
    This content is protected

    Muhammad Ali -- upright ---------crouch
    Joe Frazier -- crouch -------------Upright
    George Foreman --
    This content is protected
    ---Upright
    Larry Holmes -- upright ------------Crouch
    Mike Tyson -- crouch -------------Upright
    Evander Holyfield -- upright -------Upright
    Lennox Lewis -- upright ----------Crouch

    -----------

Janitor, should I assume that, vs. Sullivan, Langford, Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier and Tyson, you woud have Jeffries fight them similar to how Fulmer fought Basillio -- banging from the outside, tieing them up if they got closer, and only really mixing it if they're hurt or fatigued?

It doesn't matter what he does he'd still get his ass kicked. But logically you crouch against taller men and fight tall against smaller men, ofcourse that also depends on your style

Jeffries was so awkward that I never quite understood why a man nearly 6'3" and anywhere from 215-250 pounds would fight out of a crouch when he was considered one of the 'big men' of the era....however, many are completely underating Jeffries, for he did posess good speed for a man that size and he was tremendously strong and you couldnt tie him up in the clinches either, you were FORCED to fight him or else you were going to get knocked the **** out....if all fights were 45 round bouts, I have little doubt that Jeffries would defeat any heavyweight champion in history, including Ali.

Here are, I think, the two biggest questions (in picking Jeffries posture):

Against the faster guys who'd try to fight him from the outside, should he go low-swarmer?; or does the crouch slow him too much -- does he need to be more upright in order to catch them?

Against the short hard sluggers, should Jeffries try to fight outside and tall?; or will going tall make his body available to them, his opponents body unavailable to the -- should Jeffries crouch to make his body harder to reach?

Since Jeffries never fought over 25 rds ,and that only once , against a man 5'' 8", 32lbs smaller, at a snail's pace ,why do you assume he would out last everyone over 45rds ,including Ali?
Can you envisage what Jeffries face would look like after 20rds, or so ,of Ali's jab being pumped into it?
Ali ,6'3 , 212lbs would have target practice, with the Boiler Maker

Amazing how Jeffries seems to get taller with passing age....

According to a contemporary record supplied by a doctor at some prestigious eastern university, Jeffries, at the time of the second Sharkey fight, was exactly six feet tall. Not six three or four. In those days, six foot was a big man. Six four or five was a giant!
