for everyone who claims ROy was reluctant....should he of moved on back up weight instead of giving Tarver a rematch? Everyone forgives Joe for not fighting Hopkins again.
no he should have, because the first was a close fight. So he had to fight Tarver again he's not a *****. But he should have taken the weight shift in mind.
He didn't plan to fight Tarver and had plans to move up to heavyweight for one last fight against Mike Tyson but all the talk from Tarver, media and people in general he thought he had to give Tarver a rematch to shut him up for good. If he didn't fight him in a rematch he would have been bashed on for a while though in reality he didn't need to, but that's Roy Jones for you and people used to say he ducks everyone back then.
I remember Tarver was at the post fight press conference too. Obviously Roy would have been better off without doing the rematch but what can you do? I wouldn't have minded either way if he choose to or not. Tarver lost a close but clear decision. Not to mention Jones would have been retired by now :|
i wouldnt have minded if he didnt close but clear is good enough for me wasnt pushed to see calzaghe hopkins again either, i thought it was close but clear for joe and hop just spoiled but i can see why opinion is split but the issue is hopkins knows he cant actually bear calzaghe skill for skill so rematch would be a mess again
The people spoke, they thought Tarver beat Jones.....and Jones I would suppose thought he lost to Tarver as well, thus he wanted to prove the naysayers and himself that he could beat Tarver.......thats why the rematch. Well over 90% felt that Calzaghe clearly outworked Bernard Hopkins. Calzaghe knows he won clearly..... .... and he can publicly deny it all he wants, but so does Hopkins know he lost to Calzaghe...... Thus, Jones did'nt have the option of doing a Calzaghe, because a "Calzaghe "is feeling secure in the belief that you beat your opponent!:hey
Calzaghe beating Hopkins was another close but clear decision for me. Both Hopkins and Tarver didn't do enough to earn the W and got swept in the final rounds IMO.
I think his career would have turned out a lot different had he either not fought Tarver in the first place or not given him a rematch. At the end of the first Tarver fight he mentioned that if he didn't get a Tyson fight he would quit. At that stage I'd like to have seen either.
He looked half dead when he scrasped that decision against Tarver, he shouldve never bothered making 175 again. He shouldve stayed at heavyweight, maybe gone to cruiser and told Tarver to come up..
And thats the difference with Jones and Calzaghe. Jones is a far better fighter Prime for Prime, but he is FAR LESS CUNNING/CALCULATING than Calzaghe. Calzaghe would have run a mile from a rematch. The fact that Jones was thinking about retirement then tells you he was mentally a different fighter, he had reached the plateu
